Godzilla (2014) was incredible. I was surprised that they went for the straight up hero angle (though he is technically a kind of anti-hero) and skipped over any notion of him as a nuclear menace. Nonetheless, it was brilliantly executed down to the last detail. The Mutos were incredible kaiju, worthy of a place in the pantheon (as is the Shinamura of the prequel graphic novel, Godzilla: Awakening). The design and character of Godzilla seemed to be an amalgamation of all the eras of filmmaking, and the nuclear breath effect seemed more like an updated version of the original than the laser beam-esque design of the later periods.
