ShockYa: The lives of writers are inherently fascinating. What motivates them to create literary works is often worthy of examination for its own merit. Kill Your Darlings brings to the screen the stories of not one but three revered American writers, Allen Ginsberg, William Burroughs, and Jack Kerouac, recounting their adventures in New York in the 1940s with Lucien Carr. Not only is the film’s subject absolutely compelling, but first-time feature director John Krokidas has enlisted four fabulous young actors with extremely different backgrounds to portray these intellectuals at the height of their creative spirits.
In Escape From Pretoria, Daniel Radcliffe plays Tim Jenkin, a real-life political prisoner who orchestrated a prison escape from Pretoria Central Prison in 1979, during the apartheid era in South Africa. It's another off-beat role in the eclectic post-Harry Potter career, which has seen Radcliffe take on a low-key public persona, with characters you wouldn't expect from the leading man of a billion-dollar franchise.
Have you wonder why he hasn't been in a blockbuster movie since Harry Potter?
WASDuk's Chris Patton writes:
"Word on the set was that first time director John Krokidas was screaming at Daniel Radcliffe to kiss Dane DeHaan as though they were having crazy fucking monkey sex. And its this type of shit-slinging vivacity that makes Kill Your Darlings one of the best films of 2013 that nobody watched."
WOW247 says: "If Radcliffe’s previous post-Potter performances had sent the door swinging shut on any wizardly residues, then here he firmly bolts it and throws away the key.
"It would be shame for the film’s coverage to focus on Radcliffe however, because there’s much more to Krokidas’ film; even if it’s ultimately unsatisfying as an account of the Beats’ genesis, it’s still a spirited stomp through a wild and dramatic story."
