Looking beyond the gorgeous special effects, nerd humor, hipster parody and video game references, Scott Pilgrim vs. the World is an examination of relationships; how we deal with them, cope with love, loss, and heartbreak, and how they affect the human condition. Despite the film’s detachment from the reality that we experience, it’s ironic that its more honest in its depiction of human relationships than pretty much every “romantic comedy” Hollywood has put out in recent years. Scott Pilgrim vs. the World is the first genuinely great film we’ve examined in this feature, and will be seen as (and arguably already is) a true classic.
