"As a whole, it’s hard to judge Real Steel as it is a fractured piece, punctuated in equal measure by an uninteresting relationship between father and son (as we’ve come to expect from Shaun Levy) and generic robot sparring. What’s missing is not the incentive to care, but the motivation to have fun. The laughs fall flat and the film lacks personality, one gets the feeling that Levy tried too hard to engage us emotionally and thus failed to engage the fun factor. Date Night 2 would look pretty good on Levy’s to-do list right about now, and that’s saying something."
