Surprise comes easily in horror films. Something flies quickly into frame accompanied by a sudden burst in volume from the film’s score and you may literally be moved to the edge of your seat, but then you lean back in your chair as the fleeting moment of surprise leaves as swiftly as it came. The real trick is keeping you on the edge of your seat, always threatening to push you over the edge of composure. Instilling a constant sense of dread and fear is a difficult balancing act to perform, one that writer-director Jennifer Kent pulls off with seeming ease in her debut film The Babadook.
