Though his initial casting was met with fan backlash (let's feign shock and horror here), he established himself as a credible and distinct Dark Knight. Some fans have even proclaimed him the best Batman there's ever been. The Oscar-winning filmmaker has made it clear that he no longer wants to make big franchise movies, including superhero flicks, so "The Flash" may well end up being his Batman swansong.
