The Man of Steel Rumor That Would Change Superman For The Worse

There’s been an unsettling rumor floating around about Man of Steel. If true, it would mark a pretty major change to the Superman mythos, and one that we can’t at all agree with. Consider this your spoiler warning for something that might be.

Last chance before spoilers! (Cinema, Man of Steel)

I've suspected this as well, but to be entirely honest, I don't think it's as bad as this article is making it out to be. It would be a major change (if true), but his uniqueness remains intact. He's set up to be a 'pure bred' (which we knew about) Kryptonian which is supposed to not happen, as they're all genetically engineered. This makes him different and allows him the ability to choose the life he wants for himself. This is who Superman is.

He still grows up on Earth, learning the value of life at the hands of his adopted parents, and for the most part, he's still struggling to figure out who he is, where he comes from, and his place in the universe (just as he's always done). Even if Krypton is still around and he has a chance to go back, he learns this as an adult, he still grew up the same way as before, which is what shapes the man he becomes.

I don't see this as a big deal, aside from being more true to the comics.

Yea the idea of Krypton not having been destroyed doesn't phase me one bit.
DarkBlood  +   1014d ago
yeah if anyting im more curious to know how you genetically engineer someone to be whatever it is they want to be.

The whole pure bred thing, i assume it has something to do with no knowledge in place of his mind hence allows superman to be who he wants to be.

he just got to think for himself on it pretty much?

Am I missing something here or is there some evidence that suggests that Zod will die in Man Of Steel? Because if not, he can blow up the damn planet after the events of Man Of Steel, thus making the whole thing come full circle.

Not surprising to see io9 publishing a sh*t article like this though. It's like the ultimate haven for pretentious pseudo-intellectuals.

But....but Kryptonite!

That would make the story much more interesting. But now he reminded me more of Goku from Dragon Ball. An alien baby was cast off to a faraway planet. Then a fellow alien came to bring him home but he refuses because it is against his upbringing (Krytpon's warlike culture and Earth's culture).

You'd have to have an IQ of 10 to believe this.
Th3 Chr0nic  +   1013d ago
too bad most Hollywood writers suffer from this "IQ of 10" problem. hence this is totally believable.

I don't know if it will necessarily change it for the worse. I still don't know how much I like of the trailer that was released. I just hope there's some fun in it and it doesn't take itself too seriously. The trailer just seems overly dramatic and too deep.
Crazay  +   1013d ago
It has to be serious this time. It's almost like a coming of age film.

Lot of criticism lately for MoS. Pity.

Am I the only one confused and put off by the casting of Amy Adams as Lois? She's ten years older than Henry (Superman) and she looks it, she's just not what I see when I think of lois and no one has ever pictured her being like Amy in any publication of sorts..

She's just (her comes the dislikes) too old looking and not sexy enough.. :/
darklordzor  +   1013d ago
My goodness! I don't think I could disagree more. She's drop dead gorgeous and I honestly don't see her looking that much older than Cavill in the film. Besides which she's also a strong actress. Are there hotter girls that could have done it? Sure, but I'd rather have someone with good acting talent and good looks, than just some eye candy.
Crazay  +   1013d ago
I fully disagree with you in every sense. She's very very good looking and exudes all the qualities that Lois Lane should have. Confidence, strength of character and sex appeal. Amy Adams is the very definition of those qualities.
MaleManSam  +   1013d ago
Was kate Bosworth a good choice for Superman Returns, she is practically the same level as Amy in this sense (I love Amy in most of her other movies but I just cant let it gel with this)

I didn't say "Hotter" girls, It's not I'm expecting someone like Megan fox or some rubbish like that, more like how Maggie Gyllenhaal was picked for TDK, thats more appropriate.

"Superman is supposed to inspire us to be the best, and choosing sides...isn't compatible with that"

If you have three choices, help A, help B or let both suffer, a good person will help one. A good person will choose to help both given the possibility, but choosing sides is fine when there's no ideal possibility.

"What bugs me most of all is that it seems to be a change solely for change’s sake. With no real benefit..."

This is a change to make the series more mature for an adult audience without the patience for cheesy "all's perfect" superhero endings, and far prefer bittersweet outcomes (leaning on the sweet side); I don't know anyone who would want to deny Mordin in ME3 his epic death (all optional for those people who still have yet to play it - he can live too) because while it would have made us upset as kids, as adults, we appreciated the beauty of a well-placed tragedy, be it a heroic death or a sad event which sparked either satisfying revenge or something bigger.

It's tempting to want Man of Steel to be close to the comic book stories, but in truth, this would lose it the depth which will be attracting an adult audience. The Dark Knight trilogy wasn't successful because it pulled its punches, but precisely the opposite.
Yes, Superman has always been a lighter tale than Batman, but perhaps this is a problem with the source material rather than its film portrayal?
Th3 Chr0nic  +   1013d ago
dark knight trilogy not successful...says who?
spartanlemur  +   1013d ago
No no, I was saying it *was* successful because it was a deep story which didn't pull any punches.
Th3 Chr0nic  +   1013d ago
heres an even bigger spoiler for you...krypton does blow up but at the end of the movie instead of the begginning, and superman is the one that does it too, for reasons i will leave to you....

Hey if they made the first green lantern gay was stopping them from not blowing up supermans planet.
