VF: I will say that after seeing Deepwater Horizon, Berg’s other Mark Wahlberg-starring based-on-a-true-story film this year, I am more confident Berg will handle Boston well. Deepwater Horizon, about the disastrous explosion of a B.P. oil rig off the Louisiana coast in 2010, is sober and smart, a technical thriller that rattles with tension and anger. (Though not quite enough anger.) If Battleship was indeed a Michael Bay homage, then Deepwater Horizon could be seen as Berg’s nod to Paul Greengrass, specifically his film Captain Phillips—another lucid docu-drama about high-seas horror.
