This is the best news I've heard in a long time. They keep changing their mind on this and it would be such a great story. I can't wait especially with these two actors.

-Foxtrot2977d ago

Lets get this straight, Stephen King wrote Roland as white man with blue "bombardier's" eyes, constantly going into detailed descriptions of his looks and appearance over the course of the books. Illustrations, drawings and fan art have now created a crystal clear picture of who Roland is and who he's been built up to be for 34 years.

The story also heavily featured lines about his skin colour by the characters Roland comes across, lines like "white honky", "white bread" and "cracker" for example especially by a black woman called Susannah, one of his later companions, it's the dynamic of the relationship when they first meet, like she hates the fact he's white but obviously they then become friends.

Yet they've cast Idris Elba as Roland....I just don't get it, you've took away most of what was there in the books and the build up of the relationships toward Roland, even by other people he comes across on his search for the Dark Tower.

Hollywood is not all there at times. Race swap for the sake of it.

That doesn't even matter. The big picture, the whole story is what matters. Everyone has their own opinion but I will enjoy it as long as it's written and directed well because so far the two actors are excellent.

-Foxtrot2977d ago (Edited 2977d ago )

It does matter though, avid readers like me have investing into this story for years. Some people even when the books first came out and they've gotten this picture of Roland in their heads since the very start of these characters.

Yet despite all the build up of the characters and their descriptions he's throwing that away

You say "story is what matters" yet like I said Roland being white is brought up alot with the characters he meets calling him names like cracker and white bread. Susannah especially

So it affects the story a little bit as well and the development he goes through.

Point is they f***** up here...and for what "diversity" even though you have a black female lead in it with Susannah

But the story is about a white person, so they are changing the whole story just so people can get their way, that's the problem. If they cast a white actor to play blade or Spawn people would bitch and moan

thorstein2977d ago

So, instead of the best actor for the role you're worried about skin color?

Weird.

Imagine the Book of Eli with some terrible actor because the director needed him to be "white."

-Foxtrot2977d ago

See and this shitty excuse is getting out of hand aswell

"best actor"

Yeah he's a good actor but stop making out we can't have both...that we can't have a great actor AND an actor who looks the part

Why make out like Hollywood have to choose.

The place is littered full of actors, known and unknown are you really telling me they can't find someone who can do both? If you did then you would be lying to yourself.

Book of Eli was not an adapted novel. It's a film where they've created something brand new and got any actor they wanted for the whole regardless of race or even gender.

That's what studios should be doing but that's a really horrible example man...just plain terrible.

You are comparing something made from scratch to the Dark Tower, a book franchise which has been going for over 30 years.

darren_poolies2977d ago

Idris should have been MiB and Matthew should have been Roland! And they aren't even starting the story with The Gunslinger, they're starting halfway through. Ruining it before its began.

-Foxtrot2977d ago (Edited 2977d ago )

Oh god. Why rush it...it's such a good franchise

I think they have like 10 - 11 months to do this before they want to release it aswell

This is not going to be good. Seems it's going to be a slap dash job

I understand where you are coming from with the change in ethnicity for characters. I really do, especially after that god awful Fantastic Four debacle. But Idris Elba is just an amazing as hell actor.

If he was white, he would be perfect for almost any role out there. I honestly appreciate what you are saying, but I feel like to deny Idris Elba this role simply because he is Black, when he is perfect in every other way would just be a crying shame. Plus, there are plenty of cases where white actors land in roles intended for Asian characters, etc.

I will say it again, the only reason Idris Elba isnt right for this role is because he is black. He is perfect in every other way for the role. I am sorry, but in a case like that I say let the best actor for the role get the job and that actor is Idris Elba. This isn't a race swap for the sake of being PC or anything. idris Elba is just amazing. Some actors, transcend race and he is one of them. Tom Cruise is another and Samuel L Jackson is also another.

-Foxtrot2976d ago

It's not denying him because he is black it's because the STORY includes Rolands WHITE skin colour a lot

Idris is a good actor but like I've said you need to be a good actor AND look the part for the role.

freshslicepizza2976d ago

what do people around you say about you? all you do is whine. you whine about mad max fury road which won a bunch of oscars and rotten tomatoes gave rave reviews about. saying it strayed away from the character. you whine about spiderman and how the lead looks like a kid even though peter parker is a kid.

you should just close your account because you seem unable to be open minded about anything. stephen king who wrote the book is giving the new actors his blessing. if he doesn't care you certainly shouldn't. it must be easy sitting at home chastising everyone and everything while you yourself create nothing.

-Foxtrot2976d ago (Edited 2976d ago )

No one cares man, no one cares what you say

I read the first line of you whining about me whining and that's it

If you are that bothered go away. You won't be missed
