Brooklyn Review - Screen Rant

SR: Brooklyn takes place during the early 1950s, as a young Irish woman named Eilis Lacey (Saoirse Ronan) immigrates to the United States – with the assistance of members from her church like Father Flood (Jim Broadbent) – in search of a better life and more opportunities for her future. While Eilis at first struggles with the challenges of settling into a new home, as well as the heartbreak of leaving her old life (and family) behind, she eventually begins to move forward – not just by pursuing the career that she wants, but also forming a relationship with a young working-class Italian man named Antonio “Tony” Fiorello (Emory Cohen).

We Got This Covered

I’m always pleased to see that films like Brooklyn can still be made and become popular today. It feels like a throwback to a more classical form of filmmaking and storytelling, a tale about personal drama rather than grand and sweeping emotions and national conflicts. There is no violence and no massive tragedies; the tragedies are all personal, the conflicts internal, the emotions real and subtle. The Blu-ray release allows the viewer a chance to experience the drama of Brooklyn in a more personal way than a theater can, and for that reason alone I suggest you pick it up.
