CE: Film three in Peter Jackson's The Hobbit trilogy picks up where 2013's The Desolation of Smaug left off, with the dragon Smaug (voice by Benedict Cumberbatch) about to lay waste to Lake-town with his fiery wrath. However, as the movie's title suggests, Smaug isn't the main focus of the narrative, which instead has to do with the armies of Men, Elves and Orcs converging upon the gates of Mount Erebor, where an obsessed-to-the-point-of-madne ss Thorin Oakenshield (Richard Armitage, having his Gollum moment) has Bilbo Baggins (Martin Freeman) and his band of Dwarves holed up and searching for the Arkenstone. The titular battle comprises the vast majority of the movie, which means plenty of action. It all comes at the expense of the storytelling, however, making the result a disappointing — yet visually-thrilling — conclusion to what started out so promisingly with 2012's An Unexpected Journey. Warner's Blu-ray release still comes recommended, based primarily on the caliber of its audio and video. But fans looking for a more encyclopedic assortment of extras will want to hold out for the inevitable Extended Edition.
