Jeremy of The Daily Rotation wrote, "Monsters: Dark Continent is barely a sequel, failing to follow its predecessor in virtually every way, instead playing out as a very cliched war drama, with little to no actual monsters."

Godzilla director Gareth Edwards made his mark with the critically acclaimed Monsters, and while he's only producing this sequel, it does look like it might be a worthy successor to the original.
From Empire:
Gareth Edwards’ Monsters was a hugely impressive debut: a shot-on-the-hoof independent drama with massive, tentacled, alien creatures that matched any blockbuster’s visual effects. Edwards, of course, is now working on bringing Godzilla back to our big screens for Warner Bros., but his own monstrous creations live on in Monsters: Dark Continent — not so much a sequel to Edwards’ film as a “continuation”, which Edwards is executive producing.
I shouldn't be very interested in this movie without Edwards attached...but I am.
Box Office Buz: The sequel to the 2010 shock hit Monsters has now begun principal photography. Showing off how good a film can look on limited funds, Monsters mystified film fans around the world with its beauty; even I was caught in the web of beautiful locations and good looking cast members but I wasn't fully captivated by it all. Leaving a lot of room for improvement but also a hefty pair of shoes to fill Monsters Dark Continent has a challenge ahead!
i did not know that they have a planned sequel for the movie monsters which by the way is surprisingly good. i even prefer the movie monsters even if the movie is slow but the union of realism and fantasy experience is more present compared to cloverfield which was the more famous monster documentary like movie with more mayhem and chaos.
