CE: You don't have to be a jazz aficionado to get swept up in the story of Whiplash, writer/director Damien Chazelle's breakout film that distills the art form to a tale of pure blood, sweat and passion — with an emphasis on the blood and the sweat. The story of Andrew Neyman (Miles Teller), a first-year student at the prestigious Shaffer Conservatory of Music in New York City, the film chronicles his struggles to be one of jazz music's greats. But it wouldn't be nearly half as interesting without the performance of J.K. Simmons, who plays Andrew's teacher, Terence Fletcher, Shaffer's resident maestro and masochist extraordinaire. It's a role that earned Simmons an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor; and once you see the movie you'll understand why, for it's Simmons' interplay with Teller that gives the film its mesmerizing rhythm. Whiplash is one of the best movies of 2014, and this Blu-ray does not disappoint.
