The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies (2014) Review | FilmGamesEtc

Director Peter Jackson says farewell to Middle-Earth in the final part of his ‘Hobbit’ trilogy. An installment that, at times, seems to forget the eponymous hero of the film as Bilbo (Martin Freeman) moves in the background of war threatening machinations employed by dwarf, elf and human figures alike. The second installment in the trilogy, ‘The Desolation of Smaug’, was a marked improvement over the the first entry and it was my hope that the final film would continue that upwards trajectory of tighter storytelling and more exciting spectacle. While the spectacle has certainly increased it does so with diminishing returns here and the story itself suffers from the simple fact that there’s not a whole lot of it left to tell by the time Smaug (Benedict Cumberbatch) sets Lake-town ablaze and leaves the mountainside kingdom of Erebor up for grabs.
