Zack Snyder: ‘Man of Steel’ Sequel Explodes Superman, Batman Universes

Hero Complex

The untitled “Man of Steel” sequel hasn’t shot a single frame of film yet, and it’s already the most controversial movie in fandom.

Chalk that up to director Zack Snyder’s somewhat unconventional casting choices. First, comics stalwarts expressed surprise and skepticism in August with the revelation that Ben Affleck would inherit the cape and cowl from actor Christian Bale, taking on the role of Batman opposite Henry Cavill’s Superman in Snyder’s much-anticipated superhero sequel, the follow-up to his 2012 blockbuster that grossed more than $668 million at the worldwide box office.

We had enough 'explosions' in The Man of Steel. How about they focus on character development, pacing and general story structure this time.

Mr_cheese3715d ago

I agree with you. It is probably going to sound bad, but the Nolan Batman trilogy really set the standard for what I expect from the DC Universe films and too be honest with you, the Man of Steel didn't quite live up to the expectation at all. The cast was good, the story and direction, not so much.

Furthermore, how about some decent villain(s) this time? Zod was on a mission to save Krypton, making it difficult to love to hate him (the selective DNA thing was a poor attempt at connecting the villain to Hitler, but he was literally trying to save his species from extinction, making his selectiveness against the lineages that destroyed Krypton infinitely less deplorable - in fact, he never would have TRIED to adapt Earth if not for Jor El shooting their only hope of survival into space; he probably would have adapted one of those nearby, uninhabited planets) and Foara could have been a robot and had the same impact emotionally.

Superman has many great villains and they chose to explore the kryptonian villains AGAIN as they rebooted one of the most well known non-religious origin stories in the world.

I thought the selective DNA thing was to explain why Superman and all kryptonians look human?

cjflora3715d ago

Isn't that what they tried with Superman Returns? I was much more satisfied with the explosions and brawls in Man of Steel.

If you want character development, try watching Superman Returns...

Only problem I see with that is that they know this and are running around like chickens with their heads cut off to try to match the quality. Zach Snyder is no Christopher Nolan

Defectiv3_Detectiv33715d ago

This is ridiculous. MOS was co-written by David Goyer and Christopher Nolan.

ZombieKiller3715d ago

That should PROVE right there that people use other peoples names to sell the product. Just because Nolan's name was on it, doesn't make it a Nolan movie. They used his name to sell the movie despite how much he was involved.

The suit already looks good for a modern time, but I wouldn't say no to a different design. I thought Man of Steel was pretty good. But then again, I did read and watch reviews first, so I put all attention and hype on the fight scenes. Went to watch the movie, and was satisfied. The story was still pretty crap though.

"Oh no son! Don't come near me! I know you have super speed and can probably save me from this giant freaking tornado, that's so close to me yet is waiting for me to finish my whole monologue before sucking me up, without even any of the civilians behind you seeing you run that fast, but hey, I'll sacrifice myself for self-righteousness!"

cjflora3715d ago

Yea, they ruined Jonathan Kent, but that was really my only major gripe with the movie.

OCEANGROWNKUSH3715d ago

yea i tend to attempt to get as little information about a movie as possible.. im like Frank Costanza "I like to go in fresh!"

Then when i get home i start looking up reviews and message boards to compare my opinion and discuss it, i find that to be a lot more satisfying than going into a movie with pre conceived ideas and criticisms.

I can't wait for this movie! It's so good to hear about Batman/Superman. I'm so sick of The Amazing Spider-Man 2 news...
