Box Office: 'Ride Along' Arrests Top Spot, 'Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit' Stays Undercover

The Playlist:
The first weekend after the Oscar nominations is here, and what did audiences vote for? "Ride Along." The Ice Cube/Kevin Hart team up comedy made Universal very happy, pocketing over $40 million in its first weekend, marking a strong start for the movie, which should have great legs with audiences, who gave the movie an A-grade CinemaScore. And overall, the multiplexes were busy with audiences making it the second best Martin Luther King holiday weekend in history.

Chris Pine On 'Into The Woods,' 'Star Trek 3,' And His 'Jack Ryan' Regret

MovieFone

Chris Pine may be famous to most for his role as Captain Kirk in J.J. Abrams's rebooted "Star Trek" series (and, possibly to a lesser degree, as Jack Ryan in Paramount's attempted rejuvenation of that franchise), but lately he has been interested more in stretching his comedic side, in films like "Horrible Bosses 2," Joe Carnahan's "Stretch," and, most recently, Disney's lavish musical "Into the Woods," where he plays a Prince that is definitely not as charming as he ought to be.

Lone Survivor Review | GES

ges-sa.com | "War movies usually have a certain stigma about them. Critics call them over the top American propaganda and in most cases they would be right. There have only been a handful of war movies that depicted the true gritty image of how horrifying war can actually be. Lone Survivor Directed by Peter Berg is trying to join the ranks of great war movies such as Saving Private Ryan, but the question is, does it even come close?"

Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit Review | GES

ges-sa.com | "Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit tells the origin story of one of Tom Clancy’s most iconic characters Jack Ryan (Chris Pine). It’s also a reboot of the Jack Ryan franchise, which has seen veteran actors like Harrison Ford take on the character in earlier movies. In Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit we get to know Ryan as a student of the London School of Economics. After the tragic happenings of 9/11 he joins the US Marines where he gets severely injured during a helicopter crash. After the accident he needs grueling rehab and this is where he gets noticed by Thomas Harper (Kevin Costner), a CIA agent who recruits Jack into the CIA as a covert agent working on Wall Street. Years later we find Ryan fairly happy in a relationship with his previous doctor Cathy (Keira Knightley). I say fairly happy as Cathy has grown very suspicious of her fiancé as she’s caught him telling her lies about his whereabouts. At work, Jack uncovers a shady financial deal which leads him to go to Russia where he faces off with a ruthless Russian criminal named Viktor Cherevin (Kenneth Branagh), all while dealing with a nagging girlfriend back at the hotel."
