My best friend continues to swear by the original animated film (though he does love the live-action ones as well), but I admit I haven't sat down to watch them. May have to check it out and see now...

The rotoscoping is jarring in the animated LOTR. I grew up with the Rank & Bass films. Saw this as a teen and well it was alright, if its on I will watch it. Certainly not my favorite production from Bakshi. But then again I really like Cool World, in a non ironic way too!
