ATE: "One of the most common tropes I have seen in fairy tale retellings is that the storytellers try to justify villain’s actions. Whether it is through some traumatic past, a mistake made while they were young, or even being misguided by a mentor, viewers can come to sympathize with villains. Though their pasts do not truly justify a villain’s actions, you can at least see where they were coming from. Once Upon a Time follows this route, showing Regina losing the love of her life, Zelena being abandoned, and Ursula being betrayed by her father. Naturally you would assume going into an episode that dabbles in Cruella DeVil’s past that this same sympathetic route would be taken.
I am so ecstatic that it was not."
