Horizon: Zero Dawn: The Kotaku Review

For years now, the latest console generation has been coasting on the idea that more raw power means better games. The PS4’s newest exclusive, Horizon: Zero Dawn, is the rare game that delivers on that promise.

GG now has another truly great game under their belt.

ruefrak2621d ago

And here I thought I was the only one who really likes the Killzone series.

stuna12621d ago

Personally I liked all their KillZone entrys with KillZone 2 being the best in my opinion because of the melding of a good single player story combined with a solid multiplayer portion. Having GG move outside of that scope with Horizon has impressed me to their versatility.

_-EDMIX-_2621d ago

Why assume? This has nothing to do with killzone

subtenko2621d ago

there is aloooot of potential to be done with the killzone franchise withint he right direction. really we need an all out crazy fps battle with the helghast vs isa, gritty than bf1, massive, just massive. when u see the helghast army in the intro speech in kz2 you are like daaaaang. Just send them all out in a massive battle so grand it will make MAG look like a a 4x4 arena shooter

"To play Guerilla Games’ Horizon: Zero Dawn is to feel awe"

word

F0XHOUND2620d ago

Killzone was awesome, I don't feel it should ever be put next to CoD or Battlefield or compared, but in terms of an exclusive cinematic movie like experience, it was awesome. I feel like Killzone is more than just an FPS, I'd happily play a new Killzone game once every couple of years.

I am buying a PS4 Pro to go along with my 55" 4k HDR Vizio M-Series next week and this will be my first PS4 game! I can't wait! Putting the X1 and my 47" Vizio in my bedroom.

PsylentKiller2620d ago

The short version:
I like your tv. I am prepared for HZD. GOOD DEAL AT GameStop. My friends switched to PS4. I spent way too much money. Horizon: Zero Dawn is up there with The Last of Us.

The long version:
I love vizio, but I just recently converted to all samsung for 4k hdr. The vizio, I believe has 8-bit hdr vs. Samsung's 10-bit. That was last year, though, I'd still double check to see if you're fine with 8-bit. It all may be bullshit numbers as I'm not sure I can see a difference between the two. The input lag on the vizio, though, is phenomenal.

As for HZD, I just prepared my den and living room the same way. Two months ago, I bought my samsung 65 ks8300 for the LR. Den got a 50 JS7000. X1s for both but a ps4 pro for the LR and the den stayed with the ps4. Holding off on a second pro until I can compare them myself.

Just watched Kinda Funny's review today and immediately traded in one ps4 for a pro. $175 trade in for just the console at Gamestop. The deal is good till the 23rd if anyone's interested.
My friends on xbox just jumped ship to ps4 a few weeks ago (they said it was because of MS cancelling all those games). So, that kind of helped with the pro purchase. Gotta show them up, at least until they get theirs. Lol. Almost wish I would have went with Sony first this generation. All games digital and nearly 100 games on xbox. Sony has always been only for exclusives since the ps1 days. Don't know why I didn't go all in with Sony, considering how many amazing exclusives they have. Should have been reversed and only bought exclusives for xbox.
Goddamn, HZD looks amazing.

Aaaaaaaannnd....I'm done.

Thank you and Good Night

Cryptcuzz2620d ago

Welcome to the family!

I'm sure you'll love your new TV, PS4 Pro and Horizon: Zero Dawn.

Can't wait for the game myself.
Trying to beat Nioh at the moment before it's official release, so I can fully immerse in the game.

Sharingan_no_Kakashi2620d ago

And here I am stuck still stuck with my 37 inch soyo from college that only does 720p. I need a new tv. And a ps4 pro.

datboyscoop2620d ago (Edited 2620d ago )

Nice! I just got me a 49" samsung ks8000...the vizio m series was the runner up....just need to upgrade to a ps4 pro now...I've held myself from playing certain games until I upgrade.

datboyscoop2620d ago

I recently purchased the samsung ks8000. Now need to upgrade to a pro.. held my self back from playing certain games because of that .

"With Horizon, GG is finally let loose to show us how much more they’re capable of, and what they’re capable of is jaw-dropping."

Does koraku not use a rating system?

KingKionic 2621d ago

Last comment was meant as a praise not as a knock on Guerrilla Games. There going to better things now. Just want to address this for the record.

Let it sleep in a chamber.

You been downplaying Killzone all day. Hell you been downplaying Horizon for past few weeks.
Don't you have any BC games to play on your console of choice? 🤓

KingKionic 2621d ago (Edited 2621d ago )

To say they should focus on there new series isnt downplaying.

I havent been downplaying horizon for weeks.

Need to stop making stuff up on n4g.

Carry along.

Great thing about comments you can view all of my comment history for weeks.

Lets put it to the test.

Show me which ones have downplaying of horizon zero dawn.

PsylentKiller2620d ago

Hey, some of those BC games are great. Although most don't stand the test of time. It's hard playing BF1 then switching to BF:BC2.
Just finished downloading Killzone:SF again. Want to have where they were before HZD fresh in my mind when I boot it up for the first time.

skydragoonityx2621d ago

Game of the year contender and its only february

greywolf392621d ago

Not a contender, Winner BOI. Honestly, I dont see any game that will top this

deafdani2621d ago (Edited 2621d ago )

Uhhh... Horizon looks superb, but...

- Nioh
- Nier Automata
- Zelda Breath of the Wild
- Super Mario Odyssey
- Mass Effect Andromeda
- Resident Evil 7
- God of War (IF it releases this year)

All of these are (or will be) solid contenders for GOTY, for various reasons. Again, Horizon looks superb, but there's definitely very stiff competition this year. Also, we don't know what surprise hits await us yet.

DoubleTTB222621d ago

We can't forget about Red Dead Redemption 2

_-EDMIX-_2621d ago

@deaf-

"- Nioh
- Nier Automata
- Zelda Breath of the Wild
- Super Mario Odyssey
- Mass Effect Andromeda
- Resident Evil 7
- God of War (IF it releases this year)"

Lol no bud, RE7 is a great game, it's not getting GOTY or Nier lol

Wtf?

No Buddy, it's a easy call right now that Horizion is likely taking the majority of those awards

Not Mass Effect or Nier lol, this will be great game's, but Horizion is on another level.

I just don't see any game this year getting more award's.

Even God Of War which I would be shocked if it got more award's.

There is a lot of great games releasing this year don't get me wrong but a lot of those games in my personal opinion I do not see getting more Game of the Year Awards just because I like to Yakuza and I really enjoyed Kingdom Hearts 2.8 does it mean I see either of those games receiving more Game of the Year Awards than this game especially looking at the numerous perfect scores that just landed for this game

http://m.neogaf.com/showthr...

EddieNX 2620d ago

It's very likely that Mario and Zelda will get better meta scores as well as many other games. Take nothing away from Horizon its obviously great, but way too early to claim its the winner.

There are already 3 GOTY games = Horizon, Nioh and RE7 and there are plenty more to come :)

DragonDDark2620d ago

I don't care what anyone says... Persona 5 is gonna be GOTY for me.

IamTylerDurden12621d ago

Nioh is a goty contender as well, crazy that both are Sony exclusives.

mezati992621d ago (Edited 2621d ago )

that moment when you realize that every single PS4 exclusive released this year is GOTY contender

XanderZane2621d ago

I think there will be a LOT of GOTY contenders this year. Horizon seems to be one of them. It's a Day One purchase for me.

DF Weekly: Do we actually need The Last of Us Part 2 and Horizon Zero Dawn remasters?

With the details we now have in terms of features and pricing, I don't think there are any significant concerns remaining - just that perhaps that the term 'remastered' in the title is a little misplaced. Essentially, what we're dealing with here is broadly equivalent to a release along the lines of Death Stranding: Director's Cut. It's the original game with a dash of extra content and additional visual modes that tap into the power of PlayStation 5.

-Foxtrot147d ago

Bloodborne, Infamous, Killzone, Resistance, Puppeteer, Jak and Daxter etc are all better choices

Even a full on remake of Drakes Fortune I’d take

PrinceOfAnger147d ago

killzone 2/3 definitely a better choice, i have recently finished the games on pc and thought about that, a full remake like demon souls is even better

darthv72147d ago

2&3 are still fine... I'd take the first one as a full remake before the others. They could flesh out more of the backstory that the sequels touch on. Even go deeper into the lore of Helgan.

specialguest146d ago

KZ 2/3 would be amazing. KZ 2 was a graphical masterpiece back then. With today's modern tech, all of those tricks Guerilla Games did to create the effects like the lighting, storm effects, etc, they could now be done in real-time and more realistic

Cacabunga146d ago

Killzone 2-3
Golden Abyss remake
Infamous 2

RaidenBlack147d ago

Uncharted 1 still got a decent remaster for 8th gen ... a remake is not that much of a requirement ...
instead remake candidates should be from 5th or 6th gen
and as for proper remasters (not just lazy res upscale): Killzone 2 & 3 obviously and also Resistance/inFamous (as well as MGS4 :P)

-Foxtrot147d ago

My point with the list is that I’d rather see those titles than what we are getting…titles which are only 3-5 years old and still hold up today

CrashMania147d ago

Sony own the Demons Souls and Bloodborne IP, I wish they'd do something with Bloodborne at the very least.

vfl523147d ago

The way you worded that makes me think you don't realize they already remade demon souls

147d ago
GamingSinceForever147d ago

Not one of those will sell more copies than TLOU2 Remaster. The sooner we realize that these gaming sites and their followers are less than 1% of the buying public the better off we’ll be.

Sure we prefer newer titles but this is business and a business is what Sony is running.

JackBNimble146d ago

Don't you think they could be doing something better with their time and money, like maybe making something new? Or have they become lazy and just reliving the past with the same old games over and over.

Gez ... do something fresh and new already .

notachance147d ago

I'd rather for them to go Square Enix route and remake/remaster their PS1 libraries instead of these unnecessary remaster

come on, legend of dragoon..

Gamingsince1981146d ago

What's with the "need" anyway ? This is video games, no one needs them at all, we need water , we need air, we don't need games.

Barlos146d ago

I would love a remake/remaster of KZ1. For its time it really pushed the PS2 hard and because of that it had a few issues. This is begging to be given the Bluepoint touch and brought up to date. I'd love to see an updated Killzone trilogy collection for sure.

Yi-Long146d ago

Sony killed the game and the studio behind it, but a Remaster of the excellent Driveclub would absolutely be my favorite release if it happened. Just a delicious racing game.

FinalFantasyFanatic146d ago (Edited 146d ago )

So many better choices, I can't fathom why reasonably recent games are getting picked over Classics that are more deserving.

Duke19147d ago

Nope. But HD remasters are an easy cash grab that the masses shovel cash for because while they complain about remakes, they still buy them

PRIMORDUS146d ago

Not if they release on a platform that never received the original in the first place like PC.

46player146d ago

No complaint here, I want the updated graphics.

Ra3030147d ago

My thoughts on this is do we need Richard Leadbetter's or Digital Foundry's opinion on anything........ever? I know I don't they do nothing for me and never have.

specialguest147d ago

Chocoburger147d ago

That guy is a buffoon, DF Direct is the best gaming podcast around. I look forward to it every week.

BehindTheRows146d ago

By that same token, some may not NEED remasters, while others may/do.

Amplitude146d ago (Edited 146d ago )

DF videos are typically absolutely amazing game reviews first and foremost. They have great intros, explain the mechanics well, tell you if they enjoyed it or not (I usually vibe well with John's games personally), and then they have the best tech breakdowns of a game's performance which is very very important to me. I want to know what settings to run at on PC, and on PS5 I wanna know if the 60fps mode runs well or not because if it doesn't... well I'll just get it on PC (If it isn't completely broken there too). DF Retro is also always unbelievably interesting and super well edited and inspired my YouTube channel which just crossed 1200 subs (wooo!). They helped me a lot with understanding game development and got me interested in goofing around with game engines and PC building in general back in the day.

I don't mean any offence by this but you sound like somebody who skims their analysis videos, selectively scrolls to the stats, says "who cares?", and then closes it. Or possibly somebody who watches (stolen) cut clips on TikTok? Even if you are somehow unaffected by blurry images and fluctuating frame rates (some people are and I envy you) I recommend watching a full DF episode one day. They're extremely interesting and I watch literally all of them even if I have no interest in the game.

Joris de Man on composing music for the Horizon series

In the video game industry, where visual design and game mechanics typically grab the limelight, the significance of music in enhancing the overall gaming experience is often underestimated. Music can be a key component in the player’s emotional connection with a game. It amplifies emotional impact, heightens tension, and can be a powerful driver of narrative. We’ve had the chance to speak to Joris de Man, a renowned Dutch composer best known for his work on the Killzone series, Horizon: Zero Dawn, and its sequel Horizon: Forbidden West. During the Game Access conference in Brno, we talked about the process of composing music for video games and how he created the harmonies that have shaped some of our most beloved gaming experiences.

Sonic1881312d ago (Edited 312d ago )

To keep using him as the music composer in their games.

ChronoJoe312d ago

Joris seems like a great guy. I spoke to him briefly once about how much I loved his music and he was really friendly/humble.

I have yet to play Burning Shores as I just started Forbidden West (bought at launch, just unwrapped last weekend LOL) and playing on PS5.

man...I still can't believe the graphics especially now I'm playing it on my LG OLED. that graphics and with stable performance backing it up, GG really is the master of their craft!

32.7M sales in the Horizon franchise! With 8.4M coming from Forbidden West alone! Truly a hugely successful game and franchise as a whole. Looking forward to Horizon III

Shane Kim352d ago

That's kind of a huge drop though. It's only been two games.

VersusDMC352d ago

One year after realease HZD sold 7.6 million.

https://www.noobfeed.com/ne...

So not a drop off.

Unless you're saying a HFW should have sold as much now as HZD sold in 5 years?

It's been 3 games, this includes Call of the Mountain. Also no, its a great improvement over HZD.

solideagle352d ago

lol you are comparing:

HZD: 28 February 2017 - May 2023 (6 years+)

HFW: 18 February 2022 - May 2023 (1 year+)

I even liked Killzone: SF, it was a spectacle to look at, and even today it looks good. I hope they make a new one. Can you imagine how that will look, and they can get some modern FPS pointers from Bungie.
