Predict The Oscars Contest - Week 1

JL|4850d ago |Blog Post|15|

So, as I'm sure most of you know, the contests for February have been announced. If you haven't taken a look at the contest blog, you can check it out here:
http://filmwatch.com/user/b...

As you can see, one of our contests is something of a game. This month is the road to biggest awards show of the movie industry, The Academy Awards (aka the Oscars). So, to have a little fun (since I know we all love to speculate so much) I thought we'd make a contest out of predicting the Oscars. The winner of this contest will go on to win a limited edition film cell plaque from Star Wars.

Basically it goes like this: each Thursday I will create a new blog highlighting 6 of the 24 Oscar categories. You will then come in and place your predictions for each category. Now, if you have no clue on a certain category or aren't interested in it, you don't have to make a prediction. Skipping categories will not disqualify you. However, being as how the winner will be the person who makes the most correct predictions, it's at least worth taking a random guess.

Each week, I'll make sure to include at least 2 of the major categories in that week's highlighted categories. This will allow for discussion and keep things interesting. That way we don't have a dull week where it's just predictions for the Oscars for Editing, Makeup, Wardrobe/Costume and those other dull ones that incite us to take a quick bathroom break whenever they show up on Oscar night.

So, without further ado, let's get to this week's featured categories. As the saying goes..."ladies first".

Best Actress in a Leading Role
----------------------------- -----------
Annette Bening, "The Kids Are All Right"
Nicole Kidman, "Rabbit Hole"
Jennifer Lawrence, "Winter's Bone"
Natalie Portman, "Black Swan"
Michelle Williams, "Blue Valentine"

Best Actress in a Supporting Role
----------------------------- -----------
Amy Adams, "The Fighter"
Helena Bonham Carter, "The King's Speech"
Melissa Leo, "The Fighter"
Hailee Steinfeld, "True Grit"
Jacki Weaver, "Animal Kingdom"

Best Original Score
----------------------------- -----------
"How to Train Your Dragon", John Powell
"Inception", Hans Zimmer
"The King's Speech", Alexandre Desplat
"127 Hours", A.R. Rahman
"The Social Network", Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross

Best Makeup
----------------------------- -----------
"Barney's Version", Adrien Morot
"The Way Back", Edouard F. Henriques, Gregory Funk and Yolanda Toussieng
"The Wolfman", Rick Baker and Dave Elsey

Best Costume Design
----------------------------- -----------
"Alice in Wonderland", Colleen Atwood
"I Am Love", Antonella Cannarozzi
"The King's Speech", Jenny Beavan
"The Tempest", Sandy Powell
"True Grit", Mary Zophres

Best Animated Short
----------------------------- -----------
"Day & Night", Teddy Newton
"The Gruffalo", Jakob Schuh and Max Lang
"Let's Pollute", Geefwee Boedoe
"The Lost Thing", Shaun Tan and Andrew Ruhemann
"Madagascar, carnet de voyage (Madagascar, a Journey Diary)", Bastien Dubois

So, there you have it. Now, start predicting away. One last thing, though. Discussion is fine in here if you want to comment on another's choices, etc. However, when placing your votes/predictions, I would ask that you do so via a new comment (as opposed to a reply to another's predictions). This will make it easier to keep tabs. So start voting away. Give us your picks and a little something as to why you chose those.

Don't forget to check back next week as well when we take on 6 more categories.

*You must have a comment count of at least 15 for the month of February to be eligible for this contest.

I won't be counting myself in this contest, but I'm going to join in the fun.

Actress: Natalie Portman (she's a shoe-in)

Supporting Actress: Melissa Leo (just a great job in a wonderful supporting cast)

Score: "The Social Network" Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross (I'd love for Zimmer to win, but Trent and Atticus did a great job with TSN. Wonderful job of having that music set the mood and all)

Makeup: "The Wolfman"
Costume: "True Grit"
Animated Short: "Day & Night" (this was just an absolute delight to watch)

You dont think Inception will win this category? It has to win somewhere or us fanboys of Nolan will start a riot :D

JL4849d ago

If it were up to me Inception would win every category it's in. Plus it would be in Best Director category and win that too, as well as Best Editing lol.

Trent has been getting a lot of praise though for The Social Network score (as well he should), and I just see that trend continuing here. Not to mention, there is that stigma over Inception's head too for the score. When Black Swan and such were disqualified, there were quite a handful wondering why Inception wouldn't be disqualified on the same grounds for making such use of that one song.

I see Inception actually getting its accolades in the technical departments (like it did at the Critics' Choice Awards). Visual Effects damn well better go to Inception. Art Direction may even. Cinematography. It could pick one up in Sound Editing or Sound Mixing to make up for the Score thing. And I still think it's a serious contender for original screenplay (since what I believe will receive Best Picture isn't in original screenplay category...it's in adapted screenplay).

Aw, see what you mean. I didnt really notice all the praise for the Social Network score till you brought it up to be honest. I thought it was one of the rather dull parts of the movie, but thats just me haha.

Ill stick with Inception though, I think its time for Mark to get a bit of reconition for it. It could be a big suprise, at least for me.

JL4848d ago

Mark? You mean Hans? Like I said though, I'd love for him to win. Hans is one of my favorite score composers. I mean I definitely rank him right up there with the greats (and some of my favorites) like Danny Elfman, Bernard Herrmann and John Williams.

On that note, I did like The Social Network's score too. I like NiN, so Trent's work on the film was enjoyable for me.

My votes

Actress: Natalie Portman by FAR
Supporting Actress: Hailee Steinfeld, I was mesmerized by her in True Grit
