Netflix To Enter Original Programming With Mega Deal

Deadline says:

Video streaming juggernaut Netflix is becoming an original programming player. In what is probably the biggest gamble in its 14-year history, I hear Netflix has outbid several major cable networks, including HBO and AMC, for Media Rights Capital's drama series House of Cards, executive produced and directed by David Fincher and exec produced by and starring Kevin Spacey.

I'd rather Netflix focus on getting all of the other movies I want to watch on their Instant Watch instead of this stuff.

This is some insanely interesting news for so many reasons. This series was a very highly coveted project that all of the big players wanted in on. The fact that they thought so highly of it so as to make a gamble big enough to outbid HBO and AMC is very intriguing. Should this work out for them, then something tells me this isn't going to be the only "original programming" we see from them. Then what happens? Do they start selling the rights to air their shows to the likes of NBC, ABC et all or do they use it as chips in negotiating other deals? If they do such things, will it hurt their chances of bringing the competitors programming to Netflix users?

Only time will tell how this plays out but something tells me this could very well become a bit of a game changer either for the better or worse.

You bring up an interesting issue in showing their competitors programming. Right now, they have no competitors because they aren't showing anything original...but once they do, they are essentially competing with the very people who help them make money.

I don't think the companies would do anything as drastic as pull their programming off Netflix, but things could change. Who knows.

The only way that will happen is if Netflix outright attacks the studios and companies. If we see hit shows suddenly becoming Netflix exclusive, then companies will be mad.

However if its just Netflix producing its own shows then there isn't anything wrong with it. Its like differnt channels buying and playing re runs of popular TV shows. I mean look at TBS living off this stuff, and still producing their own original content. Its business.

the companies know that if they pull the content from Netflix, people will get mad at them instead of Netflix. I mean look at Fox when they pull stuff from major cable providers. People get ticked off at Fox.

And at the end of the day, you dont want it on netflix? okay netflix still has millions of users so they dont care, your loss.

I'm not saying that it's a bad thing at all. In fact I think it's a great thing for us.

@Soliderone,

Yeah that's pretty much dead on. I never see them getting far to the point of pulling any programming off, it's just a unique scenario. Personally I don't think I watch enough TV shows to really care all that much.

Seriously, if it's not a cartoon of some sort (which I use my toddler as an excuse to watch) or an amazing videos type show, I normally don't watch anything. I always say I will, and try to get into the latest and greatest shows, but I never do.

Same here, except I hardly have an excuse lol. i find cartoons and some kids shows more comical and easier to watch than normal shows. I think its partially because they put adult humor in it, but try to hide it so kids dont pick it up haha.

However I used to watch BBT but thats about it. I TRIED and honestly tried to watch new shoes, stay up to date with Lost and what not. I just cannot get myself to have a TV watching schedule, its not important to me and there is nothing interesting enough to make me put time aside during the day.

Believe me I'm going to be riding that excuse for as long as possible.
