Congrats to Dunkirk/Nolan's continued financial success. Massive shame about Valerian though. It's flawed, but doesn't deserve to be such a monumental flop.

Did you watch Valerian because I want an honest opinion. The "sneak peek" they showed in Imax theaters was boring as hell, and the commercials don't make it look any better.....

I saw it in 3D yesterday. If you're at all tempted to see it that's the format I'd recommend b/c it's a visual delight in 'maximalist' world building and design. In a way, I think one apropos comparison would be The Phantom Menace (which is something I adored as a kid and still do today despite acknowledging issues):

Pro's:

-The movie can't go 5 minutes without incorporating some new action or visual idea. You can almost feel the heartfelt enthusiasm while the plot takes really dumb turns. Like a kid rambling off a bunch of goofy ideas that...reveals issues under scrutiny.
-Impressive from the CGI to sound editing + such
-Rhianna's limited presence was put to exceptional use
-The themes and cultural context they were going for weren't incorporated smoothly into story, but I found it more sincere than say Avatar's by-the-books colonialism ripped straight from Pocahontas.
-Uplifting beginning montage with original Star Trek's optimism.

Con's:

-The worst casting choice in a blockbuster film since Andrew Garfield as Spiderman. While I know that comparison may cause some debate (some enjoyed Garfield), but little defense will come rushing towards Dane Dehaan here. He's supposedly the police officer version of Han Solo, but he in no way looks the part. He's almost as skinny as me (pretty skinny), already has bags under his eyes, and spouts off his quips in such a boring, monotone voice.
-It's not helped by the clunky dialogue between the two love interests either.
-Comedic moments don't often land (maybe a 50/50 split)
-Storytelling issues like plot cul-de-sacs, poor methods of engaging the audience, the viewer knowing more than the characters too soon, etc.

So, it's not really on The Fifth Element's level of initially-underrated films. More issues crop up; however, I still came away enjoying it. Not very tempted to call it a 'good' film, but at least a decent adventure that gives you several unique heist concepts, worlds, and more. Had the potential of being one of the best blockbusters of this year though.

The comedic side is what threw me off. During that "sneak peek" thing I had so many ideas on how to make that scene funny, and instead they built up this 10 minute scene that was so boring with one quick joke near the end which was such a low caliber joke too. Then the commercials seem to give a few quips that fall flat.
