FGE - Manchester by the Sea is a tragic story about loss and grief. The film stars Casey Affleck as Lee, a janitor from Boston who seems to have this quiet hatred for the world and himself. After the death of his brother Joe, he returns to his hometown to find that he’s been chosen to be the legal guardian of Joe’s teenage son, Patrick. Director Kenneth Lonergan has made a film that is about life in the real world, more specifically the pain and suffering one goes through when they lose someone dear to them. Lee had already experienced a terrible tragedy before his brother died which is why he’s so miserable. You would think the narrative would focus on this unsympathetic man and how he redeems himself by becoming a parent and friend to a teenager due to the conventions it presents, however things don’t work out as perfectly as that.
