TV Equals: "When “The Vampire Diaries” broke for hiatus about a month ago, I was more than a little concerned because it ended so strongly on a emotional level, with both the lows of Caroline losing her mother and shutting off her emotions, just as Stefan was finally about to tell her his true feelings for her; and the highs of Bonnie’s triumphant return and Damon’s surprisingly touching eulogy for Liz and those she left behind. Well, I’m happy to say that the break must have done the writers some good, as, despite that downer of a title (sorry, Nine Inch Nails, you know I love you!), “The Downward Spiral” was actually one of the best episodes of recent memory as a whole."
