I think everyone is surprised by the movie's weekend tally based on the fact that the first movie came out about a decade ago and you wouldn't think the brand would be as strong with fresh eyes, etc. I wasn't expecting a disaster, but I wasn't expecting the tally to be so much higher than the first one's. It seems the SpongeBob franchise is not only still strong, but stronger than ever. I think after this weekend, the studio will be wondering why they waited this long to make a sequel.

I think it's strong mainly because you have an older crowd that loved it as a kid, but Nick has kept him around for the younger ones too. I know little kids still love Spongebob to this day.

Overall I was expecting it to do better than the other releases. Especially in my area, it had a huge line for the big theaters, while Jupiter and that Son movie were shoved into smaller ones. I was a bit surprised it do so well though, like good opening numbers.
