Why We Love: The Omega Man

IGN:
Before I Am Legend, Charlton Heston was the last man on Earth.

Sixty years ago, sci-fi and horror author Richard Matheson’s classic novel I Am Legend was published. Most modern audience members best recognize that title from the 2007 Will Smith film, which featured the star tearing up the streets of post-apocalyptic Manhattan in a battle against mutated, vampiric freaks. But long before that, there was another last man on Earth -- The Omega Man!

Starring Charlton Heston, this 1971 sci-fi picture was one to remember -- a film that for all its dated cheesiness has nonetheless remained a beloved favorite for many fans over the decades. While it’s safe to say that none of the film adaptations of I Am Legend (there have been three major takes on the book) have captured the true essence of the tale, it was The Omega Man that departed from Matheson’s work the most acutely.

(A bit of an unfortunate situation, as the whole thing is about memory.) Still, it's important that we don't present ourselves as the type of dweebs who get all hung up over sci-fi remakes. Sometimes, they're damn good, as this list of ten shall prove.

In something like this, the tags aren't necessary, but it's fine if they're there. However, it should go in Culture channel only instead of Cinema.
