I don't think they did that at all. They were going one direction and due to fan reaction, decided to go another direction. In other words they listened and people STILL complain about them doing it.... lol Like I said, they could make the greatest superhero movie ever and people will still whine.
Also I don't think the film actually shows him dying, it leads you to that, but it's a superhero movie. That and him "meeting him" could mean anything, maybe it's his ghost? I didn't read that part because I haven't had a chance to get it yet and want to surprise myself.
