Captain America: The Winter Soldier’s Anthony Mackie Defends Michael B. Jordan As The Human Torch

CB: In Captain America: The Winter Soldier, Anthony Mackie plays The Falcon. In an appearance on Huffington Post Live, Mackie described being cast in the film as a “monumental moment” in his career.
“When Marvel gave me the opportunity to bring this character to life, I was so emotional and overjoyed at the opportunity of being a part of not only a franchise like that, but a studio like that,” said Mackie.

". Michael B. Jordan is a good actor, black or white."

Yeah but after all the things he's acted in theres no way he's the right fit for the Human Torch.

"And if you can’t do that, that says something about you"

lol...really.

If the Human Torch is white, then he's white. If there was a comic on an alternative universe version of the Human Torch where he's black like Nicky Fury then fair enough but if it hasn't been done why not stick to the source material.

It's not just that though, the whole "black/white" thing is the last issue people have with the casting. The guy directing it only cast him because he was in Chronicle...he didn't actually pick him if he can play the part or looks the part.

The thing is though Anthony doesn't get is that him as the Falcon...it works. The Falcon is black in the comics, they got him, a black actor to play the part....it's good casting.

If Falcon was going to be in a Marvel film for the first time and he was going to be played by a white actor...I'd be just as ticked off.

"Yeah but after all the things he's acted in theres no way he's the right fit for the Human Torch."

I literally did a double take when I read this.

Chronicle
Fruitvale Station(!!!)
Hardball
Blackout

What does a thespian need to play such a complex and deep character that screams "Flame On" and bursts into flames from the pages of a d-list comic like the Fantastic Four?

You have got to be kidding!?

"been done why not stick to the source material."

Because it makes absolutely NO DIFFERENCE to the overall story. You can stick an Asian guy in the role and as long as he turns into fire its the Human Torch.

The Human Torch was never defined by his race or ethnicity. It was never a big part of any over arching story or character depth. It makes no difference what so ever. There was never a story that made a difference in the FF universe regarding Human Torche's color.

"a black actor to play the part....it's good casting"

Really? Ben Affleck is Batman and since Batman is white is that good casting? How about Jesse Eisenburg? He's white, it's good casting, according to your logic. Gal Gadot as Wonder Woman, great casting because she and Wonder Woman are white...wait she's Israeli, that must burn you up too!

You must have been very upset when Jessica Alba was cast as Invisible Woman in the original FF, seeing as how she's latina.

steven83r3707d ago

It does make a difference to the story seeing as how he wasn't adopted in the comics. So now it's a whole different version of FF than the comics and that must piss off those Comic freaks who want everything told to the T.

You do get that all films are alternate universes, right? You're saying that they need to have an alternate universe in a comic book where the Human Torch is black before they have an alternate universe in a film where he's black? You know that the Human Torch is on fire half the time? People say "stick to the source material", I say screw that. If this is a different universe, anything could happen! I'm not saying we should race switch ALL our comic book characters because some have their ethnicity tied to their character in a powerful way (Magneto being Jewish [religion, I know], Black Panther being an African Tribal King, Captain America being the image of an "All American" man from the 40s, etc). Believe it or not, as weird as it may seem for us comic book fans, race doesn't make much of a difference other than appearance. If the next Bruce Banner in the Hulk reboot in 10 years is a black dude, it wouldn't make a difference.

Anthotis3708d ago

If race is so meaningless and unimportant, there is no reason to race swap in the first place, and the character can continue to be portrayed as they always have been.

maniacmayhem3708d ago (Edited 3708d ago )

Why he should even defend this is beyond reasoning.

It's funny, I never knew the Fantastic Four had such a diehard fanbase. For years Fox did nothing with this property, it wasn't until they finally started to develop it that the fanbase became so vocal. Can we not just be happy that they are finally doing something with the property?

Lord_Sloth3707d ago (Edited 3707d ago )

I wouldn't mind if he was black as long as his SISTER was black too. This whole adoption thing is just kinda weird...

The funny thing about this whole situation is if Spawn or Blade were to become white everybody would be a racist if they accepted that decision but nobody is allowed to complain when a white guy turns black and they fail to turn his sister black and they destroy the fact that she's actually his sister. Now he's an adopted kid (probably a rapper from the ghetto) dealin with his white sister. Cue ethnic differences as they adapt to accept each other for what they are....Wow...This gets worse the more I think about it.

That said I also take issue with Jamie Bell as Ben Grimm. I mean you might as well cast Topher Grace! No, Jamie isn't a bad actor but nothing about him says he's tough. I suppose it doesn't technically matter since he'll be a rock formation 15 minutes in but still...MICHAEL CERA WILL BE DOOM!!!

Don't much care who plays Reed since he's supposed to be a stiff character (rubbery texture aside) so it's all fine there.

That said, being the fool that I am I will end up watching this movie in hopes that they don't screw it up as badly as they did the previous 2 (Alba's "acting" was horrid) even though it isn't lookin too good.

cell9893707d ago

adoption to fix the plot hole is a huge cop out and speaks volumes just how serious the source material is been taken

cell9893707d ago

really? you hit a new low with that childish comment yourself

Defectiv3_Detectiv33707d ago

It's the simple tale of a family of superheroes that live in a skyscraper and use their jet powered car to fly into outer space. Wait, one of them is black!? Now you're really asking me to suspend my disbelief!
