IGN: Ever since Steve Carell left The Office, the writers have been sort of carrying on as if he'd never left, simply giving the business they'd normally give to Michael to another character, usually Andy. In "The Whale" it's Dwight who becomes the Michael surrogate when he needs coaching from the women of the office about how to talk to the ladyfolk. I wasn't hard to imagine Michael in this situation, probably because we actually have seen him in this situation. In the Season 3 episode "Women's Appreciation" Michael solicited advice from his female employees about how to break up with Jan. How appropriate, then, that Jan herself should show up in this episode.
