It's halfway through the summer movie season, and there's a lot of hand-wringing about the state of the Tentpole Film — yes, in spite of Avengers. This year has seen some huge high-profile flops, plus some massive films that underperformed Stateside. And meanwhile, some of the biggest films in the pipeline are having well-publicized troubles, from Lone Ranger to World War Z.
The thing is, Hollywood already knows how to make blockbuster movies that make money — they've just forgotten some of the fundamentals in the rush to claim dates in the crowded summer schedules. Here are 10 rules that Hollywood knew, but has forgotten.
Fight For Paradise Review: This reality show is nothing new but there are so many uncomfortable moments that will definitely give you the ick.
Bros Review: The series, as the title suggests, is about two adult men who want to behave like children and we are not here for that.
Going Home With Tyler Cameron Review: This is a simple, no-nonsense but cliched watch, with Cameron's boyish charms taking centre stage.
I do miss the standard practical makeup effects. That's an art that seems to be losing ground to blue screen, mo-cap and all the rest of it. I mean look at American Werewolf in London. I defy ANYONE to find a better man to wolf transformation and ALL of that was makeup SFX.
I think 2010's The Wolfman had a nice balance of CGI and practical make-up effects. I think it will be interesting to see how the new Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles will end up because the original had great designs for the turtles with no CGI.
