Why the Switch is now Sony’s biggest competitor

For the time being, Nintendo has taken the gaming world by storm with the Nintendo Switch. CSG would go so far as to say the Switch is now the PS4 line’s biggest console competitor. Sure there’s the Scorpio, but there’s nothing indicating that the Scorpio will turn the tide in Microsoft’s favor, as there are no games that will be designed around the Scorpio’s extra power. The Switch is the sexy new console in town, and it has several factors playing to its favor.

Hardware, maybe. Software, only for first party titles. Both Xbox and Playstation will continue to beat the Nintendo home consoles in that arena.

wonderfulmonkeyman2557d ago

Not if the same 3DS devs start making killer apps for the Switch. And if the list of growing Japanese Switch devs is indicative of anything, it won't be long before its got a lot of worthwhile titles outside of indies and first party. Stuff like Persona, Disgaea, the Mana collection and a new upcoming Tales Of title are a pretty good start.

AspiringProGenji2556d ago (Edited 2556d ago )

Yeah If... In the meantime...

Knowing Nintendo and the same thing happening since the Wii, that won't happen. Switch is yet another underpowered hardware so it won't get the same amount of support as PS4.

mikeslemonade2556d ago

Biggest competitor.. Like just cause you about to be 2nd place doesn't mean you are doing good. It just means that 3rd place is so shitty with Xbox 720p. If that's your standard of biggest competitor then you have low standards then. I'm calling 20 million lifetime sales for Switch. You can book it!

ABizzel12555d ago

@Wonderfulmonkeyman

The problem with that becomes the same issue the XBO is facing, but to a slightly lesser extent.

PS4 has both western and JP support.

XBO has western support, but awful JP support.

Switch is likely to have excellent JP support (and generally by default PS4 as well), but awful Western support.

It's a pick your poison type of situation for the XBO and Switch. The good news for the Switch though is it's going to be backed by Nintendo's first party, and if they move all their efforts there, then Switch will be a good platform regardless of the lack of western support.

As a matter of fact it's like Switch and XBO are like polar opposites in almost every regard, and hopefully they both find their niche and maintain sales.

Erik73572556d ago (Edited 2556d ago )

Pc beats both ps4 and Xbox in that area if you wanna look at it that way. Especially now that it not only is getti g good amount of exclusives Indies but also Xbox exclusives.

piroh2556d ago

You cant compare playstation exclusives to pc exclusive indies, its a massive difference. Thats why PlayStation brand is where it is

TekoIie2556d ago

@piroh

Yeh I'm pretty sure you can't compare PlayStation exclusives to "PC exclusive indies"...

Not like you slanted the argument or anything.

piroh2556d ago

@Tekolie

The difference is PlayStation exclusives are winning GOTY awards on yearly basis

Vegamyster2556d ago

piroh

Zelda will probably win GOTY this year from most sites, i don't think you're going to find too many on this particular site that would agree with that though, it wouldn't surprise me in the least if P5 or HZD won in the user votes at the end of the year that Chris does. Why? Because it's subjective.

PC doesn't get the same big budget games as Sony but it does get a lot and now that MS is supporting the platform it does have a very large selection by the end of the year. Yes the Playstation brand has become very successful but so has the platforms on PC. Granted PC isn't a console and PS probably won't be challenged in that space for a long time, i don't expect the Switch to come close.

Elda2556d ago

PC is not a gaming console,it's a personal computer.PS4,XBO & the Switch are gaming consoles.

Death2556d ago

@elda,

PC is a platform like Xbox or a PlayStation are platforms. I'd devs target Windows 10, they can target PC, Xbox One and Scorpio at the same time.

2556d ago
bluefox7552556d ago

PC exclusives don't beat PS4 exclusives though. There are "more" of them, but how many of them stand out? Civilization? Any time a PC exclusive gets big enough, it ends up being ported to PS4, (Xcom, Divinity, etc). Heck, even the major MMOs come to console now (FF14, ESO). I am a PC gamer, and the whole reason I own a PS4 is exclusives.

objdadon2556d ago

I can't play horizon zero dawn, days gone, death stranding, Spider-Man, god of war and the last of us 2 on pc, so I'll have to pass on that.

Kribwalker2556d ago

@obdajon

Well you will be able to soon as PS4 games and exclusives are becoming available on PSnow, it's started in its beta form with launch games but it's only a matter of time before newer exclusives become available

Dragonscale2555d ago

What does this article have to do with pc?

AmUnRa2555d ago

Stay on topic, nobody is talking here about your PC. 👎👎Its about the PS4 and the Switch.

Last_Boss2555d ago

But Batman on p.c tho!! Lmao

OoglyBoogly2555d ago (Edited 2555d ago )

@piroh

Hardly like PC is hurting in the exclusives department...indie or not.

I look at games like ARMA 2 and 3 with mods like DayZ and Breaking Point and have over 400 hours in ARMA 3 alone! I've NEVER come CLOSE to that with any console exclusive.

So yeah, while PS4 might have popular exclusives (I mean, I don't even own any consoles but Uncharted has been my favorite series ever so far) the PC isn't doing bad by any means.

I don't see Microsoft beating anyone when it comes to first party titles, even iOS got better exclusives than Xbox this year.

_-EDMIX-_2556d ago

"Both Xbox and Playstation will continue to beat the Nintendo home consoles in that arena."

Well yes, if Nintendo even made dedicated home consoles anymore.

Switch sorta shows that they clearly agree that they can't hang in regards to home console, as to why they went the portable route, which I think was a good idea.

Heck I predicted that move years ago as it fits Nintendo really well.

They practically handed Sony and MS the hardcore console market.

rainslacker2556d ago (Edited 2556d ago )

Honestly, I always felt PS and Nintendo consoles were always complimentary and supplimental to one another, that people that are interested in having more choices would likely choose those two over MS being put in the mix. I think they just share a lot of the genres of software which appeals to PS fans.

I don't know if I really consider them direct competitors though. Nintendo hasn't really tried to compete directly and succeeded in a long while. Wii succeeded because it was completely different. WiiU was more like last gen consoles, and failed. Gamecube and N64 were more traditional type consoles, and they failed. Switch isn't a tradiional console, and so far it looks like it might be successful. But that suceess doesn't necesarrily mean that Nintendo is directly competiting, nor trying to "beat" Sony's PS4. I think Nintendo is just trying to carve out their own segment, like they did with the Wii, like they do with their handhelds, and what all signs indicate that they're trying to do with Switch.

As far as IF switch is an actual competitor for where Sony is selling their consoles, I'd have to say no. Despite a few rabid Nintendo fan boys thinking it's so, truth is, is that the power just isn't there to maintain a market presence in the same places. Power alone will prevent Nintendo from receiving a lot of third party support, and while Nintendo can certainly do well with their own offerings, those 3rd parties are also important to push it beyond more than fans of Nintendo software.

WelkinCole2556d ago

The thing is in terms of second console the Switch has a much better chance than the Scorpio.

Scorpio is competing head on with the PS4 Pro/PS4 which has already won. What then is left is the second console spot and personally I would rather buy the swtich which is has better exclusives than the Scorpio and cheaper to boot.

IamTylerDurden12555d ago

Nintendo appeals to a different demographic. Even if Switch sales exceed xb1 sales Microsoft will still be Sony's biggest competitor. There are ppl who will choose xb1 over PS4, but there aren't that many ppl who were contemplating buying a PS4 but now are buying a Switch instead. PS4 and xb1 have the major AAA multiplats that Switch will not have. Red Dead Redemption 2, CoD WWII, Battlefield, Battlefront 2, and all the AAAs that already released. Mass Effect, Titanfall, Dishonored, Wathdogs, Wildlands, For Honor ect. If ppl want to play these games they won't be able to on Switch.

XanderZane2555d ago (Edited 2555d ago )

I agree, but this title is probably a bit wrong. It should read.

"Why the Switch is now Sony’s biggest competitor IN JAPAN"
This I can agree with, but everywhere else in the world the PS4 (PS4 Pro) and XBox One (Scorpio) will most likely still outsell the Switch.

The fact the Switch is a 9th generation game console doesn't help them prove their point either. Still, once the PS5 is released I'm sure analyst will be saying how much it needs to catch up.

@mikeslemonade
The Switch is already in 1st place and will be there for awhile. It's a 9th generation game console. The 8th generation is pretty much set in stone.
1. PS4
2. XBox One
3. Wii U.

Scatpants2555d ago

I'll take Nintendo games over Gears Halo Forza any day. Sony does have them beat with software though.

Well sales wise sure Xbox is a dead brand outside US.

343_Guilty_Spark2556d ago

Okay so if NA is the only thing that really matters to Microsoft then...?

Stogz2556d ago

Yeah totally MS doesn't care about worldwide at all...goofiest comment I've read all day.

notachance2556d ago (Edited 2556d ago )

then when the other heavily populated regions are catching up to US in terms of gaming culture, Xbox gonna get destroyed hard if they don't start investing in other regions from now.

like how there's no Xbox official customer support in my country, that's damn lame, unless they can afford to have multiple consoles there's no one in their right mind that'd choose Xbox over PS in here.

people that say XB gives equal support to regions outside NA/UK are pure blind.

TheTony3162555d ago

They tried to win over Japan with the 360 and failed. They focus on the US because they know that most people in Asia and Europe don't care about Xbox.

Allsystemgamer2556d ago

nX2556d ago

It's not forbidden, it's just strange to prefer Xbox these days. We're not in 2008 anymore when there were quite a few good reasons to own a Xbox.

endi1232556d ago

I own an Xbox because of the controller (elite controller) for playing multiplayer games but I also own an ps4 (switched to pro this year) for its great exclusives, I'm also probably going to buy the Scorpio, I do agree with you that there is a few reasons to buy an Xbox over ps4 for now considering exclusives but still Xbox is an great console
Maybe this e3 will make the Xbox more relevant, who knows

Goldby2555d ago

Ms is giving away hats

I NEED ME MY HAT!!!!

Scatpants2555d ago

The reason there is such a "hat wagon" for Xbox is that they stopped making games. Now they just cycle their 3 big exclusives. That sucks. I have an Xbox, it pretty much collects dust.

Stoped reading after
"there are no games that will be designed around the Scorpio’s extra power" guy obviously knows nothing. As developers have already stated they will program games for Scorpio first then downgrade for xboxoneS then xboxone like they do for PC. Oh course they will use Scorpios extra power. Dumb statement.

DrJones2556d ago

I know. Dumb fanboy author

XanderZane2555d ago

Yes, developers have already said this many, many times and are already making games using the Scoprio dev kits. Of course biased fanboys don't want to hear or believe it, until the actual games are shown. E3 is going to be interesting and a lot of crow will be eaten on that day.

Scatpants2555d ago (Edited 2555d ago )

I think what the author wants is a game so next gen that there is no possible way to run it on anything other than the Scorpio. He wants Scorpio exclusives.

BigWan782556d ago

@PhoenixUp...

your being logical and N4G hates logical...

i have a switch and it's not even close to being sony's main competitor...
switch is being drooled over, because the initial honeymoon phase is still intact....

switch's main competitor is still the smartphone... how to do i know, most people will reach for their iphone/android phone 8x out of 10x vs pickin up the switch to play it... nintendo has to worry about the mobile space, and they have yet to even officially compete on the home console aspect of the unit yet...

Last_Boss2555d ago

That 1st paragraph is truth! 2 ports of exclusive games early on, that are loved franchises. Let's see the really good 3rd party support get that type of love. Even Xenoblade & Fire Emblem won't get that Mario & Zelda love. So nothing is a victory for them, cause it's standard fair.

rainslacker2556d ago (Edited 2556d ago )

No one said they weren't legitimate, just they weren't Sony's biggest competitor anymore.

I personally think it's too early to make that claim though. As of right now, I think MS is probably still a bigget competitor, because they actually are directly competiting, and the hardware itself is more similar than what Switch is offering.

The premise of competition, in this context at least, is that when a customer is looking for a console that can play current gen games, they're going to look at the choices. While Switch does have some good offerings out or coming up, it just doesn't have the primary offerings that the general mass market gamer would be looking for, so it's less likely people would pick up a Switch over a PS4 or Xbox. Nintendo came in weak this gen no matter how one wants to define the gen. WiiU was underpowered for this gen. Switch is also for this gen. It just doesn't have what it needs to keep up with current game designs, so the designs have to be made to accomadate Switch....which means support is going to be limited.

Switch offers it's own unique selling point....it's a hybrid/portable system with enough power to get by overall....but it's not going to be a go to primary console for those looking for the more traditional gaming experience.

2555d ago
+ Show (2) more repliesLast reply 2555d ago
corroios2556d ago

Portable hybrid is not in competition with a home console. Two different markets and targets. It can sell 100 millions and doesnt have any impact on home console market. Both the ps4 and xbox are selling the same if not more.

The target gamers arent necessary the same and age wise there is also a diference. The 3ds sells tons of consoles but that got zero impact on home consoles

EddieNX 2556d ago

I agree with this, kind of.

PlebeGamer2556d ago

That argument is flawed: The 3DS wasn't playing PS4 tier games. Any time the Switch gets a multiplat, it is literally in direct competition with the PS4, because very few people would get the PS4 and Switch version. Make no mistake, they are competing, but not the same way PS4 and XB1 are. Nintendo is offering portability, as well as the largest exclusive lineup of any first party, while Sony is offering their sparser exclusives and more graphically impressive games.

Judging from the Switch's awesome launch, and the fact it sold mostly to young adult men, Sony's biggest demographic, Sony should prepare itself to fend off Nintendo more than Microsoft.

corroios2556d ago

Your argument is flawed. the Switch isnt playing tier PS4 games.

The Switch got zero big 3rd party games.

Largest firts party games? again in what earth? are you counting wii u games versions, because until now they got zero exclusives games made for the Switch.

The first one will be Arms and again its something not really on PS4 tier.

PlebeGamer2556d ago (Edited 2556d ago )

We'll see what the Switch has at E3, but there is at least one head to head comparison comparison coming: Skyrim.

And I was saying it will be bringing its first party franchises, which are massive in general, to the Switch, not that they've already hit. Though let's be honest, Zelda is exclusive to Nintendo platforms, and will be exclusive to the Switch going forward. Mario Kart 8 is exclusive to Nintendo platforms, with Deluxe being Switch exclusive, and it's on pace to be the fastest selling game in 2017.

In terms of actual 100% Switch exclusive games,Mario Odyssey is going to be somewhere between Zelda and Mario Kart 8 Deluxe in terms of sales, going by historical trends. Splatoon 2 will probably sell more than 10mil over the Switch's lifetime. And Xenoblade 2 is a wildcard, because the first two games have been critically successful, but were doomed because they came out when their respective systems were dead.

Also, saying ARMS is not PS4 tier is baloney. How is ARMS any less "PS4 tier" than Street Fighter V, a PS4 console exclusive, despite being more complicated and likely to sell better?

We're not even touching on expected/rumored titles, like Monster Hunter, SMT, Pokemon, Smash, Metroid, Rabbids, etc.

_-EDMIX-_2556d ago

"The 3DS wasn't playing PS4 tier games"

???

Neither is Switch so what are you talking about?

"Any time the Switch gets a multiplat, it is literally in direct competition with the PS4"

Like what? I mean....what multiplatform game is on PS4, that was made to max the PS4, that is also on Switch?

The games I see shared with Switch and PS4 are also games that are on PS3 or Vita or clearly less demanding.

Sorry but they don't share the same market of games.

Prey
Battlefront 2
Call Of Duty WWII
Destiny 2
Shadow Of War

etc are not coming to Switch....their sequels are not coming to Switch, you have ENTIRE SERIES not coming to Nintendo platforms, I think I'd call that a "market" of games not coming to that platform.

They can't "compete" if they are in different markets bud.

Sony isn't making a portable to go after those games,
Nintendo didn't make a home console to go after PS4 games....

THUS...different market. I don't know how Nintendo is "competing" with a company by making a portable that can't support PS4 game....

Using your generalization in regards to logic, might as well so ios and android are also competing with PS4, heck so is Burger King, they have a gaming app, sure they are competing too lol

Sony's "demographc" are people buying AAA 3rd party and first party games.

ie COD, Assassins Creed, Mass Effect, Battlefront, Battlefield, Call Of Duty, Prey etc, you know...titles that are not gong on Switch...

GAMES sell systems, people buy hardware to PLAY SOFTWARE. Know how target a demographic? Actually get the games that are coming to PS4, on Switch by actually having powerful hardware in the first place.

People are not buying PS4 or XONE because they are "young adult men" they are buying it because Assassins Creed, Mass Effect, Battlefront, Battlefield, Call Of Duty ON TOP of first party games are on PS4 and XONE.

That is like saying "Sony should prepare itself to fend off Apple and Android" LMFAO!

If you get PS4's and XONE's games, you get the target demographic your looking for bud. If you don't have PS4 and XONE games, I don't get how you can beat PS4 or XONE or even get the people who BUY PS4 and XONE to buy your platform.

GET THE SAME GAMES, THEN YOU GET THE PEOPLE! Its pretty simple bud.

_-EDMIX-_2556d ago

@Ple- "We'll see what the Switch has at E3, but there is at least one head to head comparison comparison coming: Skyrim"

We already have games being announced RIGHT NOW that are not coming to Switch.

Battlefront 2, Destiny 2, Prey, Call Of Duty WWII etc. Did we need to wait for E3 to find out if they had a PS4 version or? LMFAO!

Skyrim? A last gen game?

I agree, to compare the portable that docks, which is less powerful than even the base consoles X1 and PS4, with less features, is hilarious to me. I am not into portable or Indy games. I game on all the consoles but the Xbox is still my console of choice. Looking so foward to the Scorpio. Who in their right mind thought MS would crank out more exclusives than Sony or Nintendo? I rank my consoles on use not exclusives. Which console gets the most use which includes, tv, games third and first party, apps, and online. There are 2 PS4 exclusives I am looking forward to the rest of the year, and I am currently playing more exclusives on Xbox, so to many of us Xbox is fine.

Scatpants2555d ago

But it is in competition with home consoles. It's a machine that plays games. Do you think if a person has no consoles and then buys a Switch that they will then buy a home console at the same time? No, they are going to choose one or the other which equals competition.
