PS4 Pro Performance Is Equivalent to $900 PC, It's "Really High Benchmark" for Console - ARK Dev

PS4 Pro performance is roughly equivalent to a $900 PC, according to ARK Lead Programmer Jeremy Stieglitz who's very impressed with its performance.

The team is also looking into PSVR and crossplay options with other platforms.

When you put it that way the PS4 Pro is quite the bargain.

mikeslemonade2694d ago (Edited 2694d ago )

$900 sounds about right.

GTX 970 $250
CPU $250
PSU $30
Motherboard $60
Ram $60.
Case $10
HDD $40
OS: $90
Total: $790
After tax you getting pretty close to $900. And you have to build the PC and buy the parts piece by piece.

If you go AMD side you can get it like as much as 30% cheaper.

Alexious2694d ago

A $250 is more powerful than PS4 Pro's, though.

mikeslemonade2694d ago (Edited 2694d ago )

I went with a Intel board. Which is current gen I5 or last gen I5. You can cheaply go AMD.

Vegamyster2694d ago

What $250 CPU are you buying? A good i5 is under $200, AMD FX 8320 is well under $150.

XStation4pio_Pro2694d ago (Edited 2694d ago )

@alexious:
a $250 card gets you an rx480 with peak 5.8 TFLOPS, but you have to account for the fact that they aren't directly comparable because consoles are built for pretty much nothing but pushing graphics so the gpu and APIs are customized, efficient and down to the metal (same reason dx12 doesn't make a huge difference on the x1) so they are going to be in the same neighborhood at the very least in terms of performanc. PCs don't have as much of a luxury in that particular neighborhood of performance gain.

ChrisW2694d ago

Power equivalent to a GTX 970? Doubtful. Maybe a GTX 960.

Youngindy212694d ago

Cases are more than 10 dollars. That's absurd.

kevnb2694d ago

Digital foundry built their pc with 480, found that games played well around 1440p and it seems the ps4 pro plays most games around the same.

Vhampir2694d ago

If you know how and where to shop, you can build an equivalent, or a little better, PC for $500 at most.

Both XBox One and PS4(pro aswell) use AMD jaguar APUs, so you may as well go by AMD prices. Windows 10 can be bought for $20, or for free even if you don't mind being watched. RX470 for $160, which is more powerful than what's in the PS4 pro. The rest can be bought even cheaper in combo deals.

thexmanone2694d ago

$10 for the case and $30 for the PSU. I don`t think so.

starchild2694d ago

I could easily build a PC for around $600 that would generally outperform the PS4 Pro. I don't know where people get these extremely skewed figures.

2694d ago
tontontam02694d ago

@aquamala
intel-i7 processors has significant performance gains over i5 processors on some games I don't know why that is the case, but I'm planning on buying an i7 processor when kaby lake comes out.

game4funz2694d ago (Edited 2694d ago )

A $250 cpu is a lot more powerful then the cpu in the ps4 pro.
Doesn't sound right at all.

$10 for a case? what kind of case are you getting? really shows how you do not know what you are talking about.
$30 for a power supply. Well good luck running the gtx970 + whatever $250 cpu youre thinking of.

strifeblade2694d ago

wow if ps4 is a 900$ pc then scorpio is like a 1400$ pc. Thats amazing

Princess_Pilfer2694d ago

1: https://pcpartpicker.com/li...
650USD. Didn't even bother to find a sale, and this will thrash a PS4 pro in terms of performance (partly GPU, but mostly the way, way, way better CPU.) And yes, the fancy upscaling is perfectly possible on PC if the devs actually wanted to do it. (Ubisoft already has.)

2: Ubuntu. No OS cost.

3: PS+ eats your money. (and the games they "give" you are all old enough that you probably don't care and/or won't play them so are a waste of money, and PC users get free games all the time without pirating)

n4rc2694d ago (Edited 2693d ago )

$900 crushes the ps4p and probably scorpio as well (only say probably since we dont know final specs or price)

maybe a prebuilt retail system at $900..

10 disagrees about a $400 console not being as powerful as a $900 pc... man, you fanboys really are delusional.. lol

2694d ago
sinjonezp2694d ago

WRong about PSU. Best price would be 60 $ evga. Non sli psu if running a 970 and i5...case 10 dollars? Just no.....mobo 60?? Not for an intel that requires good bandwidth for memory and pci express lanes...Cheapest quality terabyte hdd would be 59-69$ so some of this data is incorrect it's still close but might as well go gtx 1060 6gb for 269 over 970..

Drizzy2694d ago

Damn shitty case,hdd,ram and psu

Movefasta19932694d ago

You've never heard of a rx480???

TwistedMetal2694d ago

dont forget shipping and handling. a ps4 pro you can pick up at any retialer.

Sy_Wolf2694d ago

Where did you get those prices from?

Matology2694d ago

I wouldn't be putting a GTX 970 with a cheep ass PSU. And besides its more like 470-480 AMD card. Your asking for trouble with cheap PSU's.

KillBill2694d ago

You forgot the keyboard/mouse, why does everyone forget that? ha

robleroy2694d ago

you forgot the controller

hiredhelp2694d ago

If you going put a $30 PSU in my pc I kick your butt your pricing man is way off base mike.

mochachino2693d ago (Edited 2693d ago )

That CPU/GPU combination would destroy a PS4 Pro in performance.

Consoles are a great value for their performance. You couldn't build a PC from scratch that performs as well as a console for the same price. But if you already have the OS, Case, Ram, etc. and are just upgrading the GPU you can demolish consoles for less money.

A 2500k, which is 6 year old CPU, paired with even a 1060 or 480 still outperforms a PS4 Pro by a lot. And you must add 60 per year for PSN Plus. Making the 5 year cost the same but with worse performance.

Point is, if you already have a PC it's better to spend money on an upgrade than on a console.

mikeslemonade2693d ago

lol because you pedestrians here on N4G don't know how to deal shop.

Sometimes the cases and psu are free after rebate. Or around $10-$20 after the rebate. One gtx 970 and those components only needs like a 450w PSU.

addictgamer2693d ago

But I already have a 2 year old i5/970 computer. I guess building a computer to "match" ps4 pro level graphics now is free

ssmilloy362693d ago

30$ psu. plan on malfunction

agent45322693d ago

Agreed except PC with those parts offers both NATIVE 1080p/4K resolution and 60 frames per second for 1080p and 30 frames per second for 4K resolution. On contrast on PS4 Pro is UPSCALE 4K resolution and either 30 frames per second or less and not all PS4 Pro games run at native 1080p/60 frames per second. Does not counting the non-gaming features the PC offers. The PS4 Pro is an overclocked OG PS4 no more no less. Is cheaper to buy a new case and overclock than build a new PS4 from the ground up.

josephayal2693d ago

PS4 Pro is the ultimate gaming super computer system console machine ultra powerful, i love my PS4 pro

kraenk122693d ago

@ChrisW

A GTX970 is roughly 4 TF either so quite comparable actually.

Zarock2693d ago (Edited 2693d ago )

That cpu Is probably a 4 core cpu. Since the PS4 Is 8 cores, You can get an 8 core Xeon cpu for 65$ only.

mikeslemonade2693d ago

Take this you pedestrians!

$30 after rebate
http://www.newegg.com/Produ...

$10 after rebate when i saw the deal
http://www.newegg.com/Produ...

mikeslemonade2693d ago

and lol at blowing up. New gen i5 and i7 cpus run at 65c stock and 970 requires like around 200(?) watts. Also runs at 80c stock.

So you pedestrians probably still cheaping out on the AMD side or old gen NVIDIA cards. I have 980ti with 4790k, eat my dust!

Kurdishcurse2693d ago

except the ps4 pro is nowhere near gtx970 performance. not even half actually id say its bafely reaching a 670 in power. too bad the cpu is as strong as a wet napkin. this is another reason why the ark dev is either lying for marketing or pulling poney dust out of his bumbum.

Not a huge surprise that they got to release. Makes sense for Sony to get good games onnthe system.
I'm not sold on the $900 pc equivalent part though. A bit too much like PR speak for me, but I do imagine that it's good value for money.

Festano2694d ago

I agree with you, I think even a $600 PC might easily outperform the Pro.

Aloy-Boyfriend2694d ago

False. In one article about building a PC that matches the PS4 , the cost was between $500 and $600. So that $600 pc is the equivalent of a OG PS4.

masterfox2694d ago

I agree about to play right now Uncharted 4 visually similar game on my mighty PC...oh wait!!!.... there's none actually that can reach Uncharted 4 visuals or gameplay, god damnn, oh well going to play a similar Driveclub racing game on my mighty PC that can portray better weather effects or better photorealistic images.....what!!!?, theres none too for the PC!!!!!!. god damn it!.

oh hell with this PC gaming going back to my ready to play stunning games on my PS4. :D

aquamala2694d ago

PS4 Pro is only running this game at 720p 60fps or 1080p 30-60fps, pretty sure a $600 PC runs this game better than that

Vegamyster2694d ago (Edited 2694d ago )

@XiKurapikaKurta

Probably not $600 but For $900 your can easily get something with a 1070 & OS in it which blows the 970 away.

"We estimate it would cost at least $900 to build a similarly powerful PC, and that’s if you were custom-building it with extreme cost control. We estimate its raw GPU performance is similar to an NVIDIA 970"

Just sounds like PR speak.

masterfox-- are you talking about that interactive movie ? lol uncharted is nothing but cutscenes it's like a soup with a lot of broth but no content. and btw the witcher 3 easily beats uncharted in terms of visuals and gameplay so what are you talking about if you were a PC gamer you would know this dont play the console version and say it looks bad becuase of course it will it's on the console. the same with driveclub go and try project cars or forza forza horizon 3 on PC @ 1440p or 4k maxed and come back and tell me driveclub looks better

starchild2694d ago

@masterfox

Your anti-PC comments are always filled with delusion. You clearly haven't played on any decent gaming PC.

joshljr2694d ago (Edited 2694d ago )

In raw power then yes, but console games are often optimised specifically to get everything out of any given system.

How much they'll be able to get away with on a PC is an unknown quantity.

On a side note: Would love for multi platform games to be cross platform though... But that might be because I'm on the less popular Xbox 😉

game4funz2694d ago

@Xiku

Well if you take into account the fact that most ps4 pro owners already had a ps4 that would mean they mightve spent upwards of 700$ for this gen alone.

I've only spent 250$ or so to upgrade my graphics card. done.

robleroy2694d ago

first let me see a $600 pc running an uncharted4 alike game as smooth and good-looking as a ps4 does.......
Consoles are built for games..
PC's are not!!!...and are restrained by slots (the slots in which you plug your graphics card, CPU and memory. (consoles don't have those...))
.And games are better tweaked for consoles .a pc can have gazillion hardware setups. And let us not think about the controller and device options (kinect, move, psvr, wii)

zidane13412693d ago (Edited 2693d ago )

Masterfox: are you seriously saying a computer couldn't handle uncharted? That's the dumbest thing I've heard all day, congratulations! Computers could smoke uncharted, and if you think otherwise your straight up crazy

Unspoken2693d ago

Easily. GTX 1060 would smoke the PS4 Pro.

More in the $700-800 range I think, and with $400 PS4 pro and paying $60 to play online a year for 6 years PS4 pro gaming costs the same. And pc components drop their prices fast, that $700 PC today you Can build next year for $500 .

pleasuretokill2694d ago

Not to mention, PC games are usually always cheaper than console games, by a lot! Steam sales alone will allow you to save %50-80 off most AAA titles during winter and summer sales, when you add it all up... PC gaming is better if you can afford the up front cost of the hardware.

SierraGuy2694d ago

Guys...ps4 pro also supports remote play so factor in that hardware / software cost. Just saying...

Princess_Pilfer2694d ago

Not even that.
https://pcpartpicker.com/li...

635USD, if you get nothing on sale. And the CPU is way more powerful than the PS4 pros, so when you're dealing with CPU bound process it will *way* outperform the PS4.

thisismyaccount2694d ago

At pl.tokill

Yeah, PC games tend to be much cheaper .. maybe when you buy them during one of those Steam Summer/Winter sales perhaps? Day 1 and few months after, both version will cost the same.

GTA5 still costs €60 on steam http://store.steampowered.c...
Amazon $60 .. used? $30 https://www.amazon.com/Gran...
Witcher 3 on steam €30, on GoG €15
Witcher 3 on PS4 €50, XB1 €40, PC €30 (Gamestop.de)

I'm sure armchair pundits are bigger experts in PC vs PS4 performance than a developer whose job it is to measure such things though...

Str8Chaos742694d ago

Or you can run a benchmark with actual numbers and compare them.

starchild2694d ago

Developers aren't immune to saying stupid things though. I don't doubt they are knowledgeable about the very particular aspect of game making they are involved in (art, programming, level design, etc), but that doesn't make them experts in everything gaming-related.

The fact is, these things have already been tested and the results are well documented. http://m.neogaf.com/showthr...

It doesn't take anywhere near a $900 PC to match, and even beat, the PS4 Pro.

n4rc2694d ago

we arent talking game development, we are talking hardware... its an apples to apples comparison, it doesnt take a genius to figure it out..

agent45322693d ago

It depends because PC gamers built their PC from the ground up. Basically, they know which parts are cheap but efficient plus knowing the ins and outs of PC parts by understanding clockspeeds, ram, temperature, etc. All of that gives credibility to PC gamers. What if Sony gave the dev $25 million dollars to say the PS4 Pro is on par to a $900.00 PC. After all, Sonys' goal is to sell PS4 Pro systems. No corporation nor game developer that makes games for say system is going to admit:

"We overclocked the OG PS4 and is on par to a low end gaming PC."

If Sony and say game developer were to say that, how many PS4 Pro would be sold?

kraenk122693d ago (Edited 2693d ago )

@starchild

I also mostly game on PC but I as this developer I sure know, and you know too, that a console of the same power by far outperforms the PC equivalent due to better optimised hardware...a simple benchmarks doesn't count...that's what this is about! Deny it all you want.

@masterfox: Relax and take your fan boy goggles off for a second. Exclusives built specifically for a console are obviously going to look fantastic but U4's downfall is that it's only 30fps. Compare any game running on ultra settings on PC compared to PS4PRO the amount of shortcuts it takes to run any game on 4k or even 1080p 60fps is laughable, look up Rise of the Tomb Raider for example. Oh and any game with mods including Skyrim, a game from 2011 looks better than U4. Not downing U4 in anyway, it's gorgeous but you'd have to be blind to think any consoles can outperform a PC.

no_more_heroes2694d ago

How is the Pro in terms of noise? Is it quieter than the base ps4?

Antnee5342694d ago

I have the pro and mine is quieter than the base ps4

no_more_heroes2694d ago

Cool. I vaguely remember reading something like that, but wasn't sure. If it's noticeably quieter, then I think I'll try and get one sooner than planned. I don't have a 4k screen yet, but it looks like there will be an improved 1080p option in games so it'll still be good to get.

Now to start saving.

crazychris41242694d ago (Edited 2694d ago )

Never had the OG PS4 but I used an Android app to measure sound and the highest it got was 40 db in Infamous Second Son. It usually stays around 30-35 during gaming, rare to go over. I only notice it when playing at night or during quiet moments.

Slappy McGee2694d ago

The Pro is louder after playing a while. I never heard the OG PS4 (non slim) from where i sit across from my tv but i can hear the Pro. It's not loud enough to be annoying or anything but it took me by surprise enough to mute my tv and determine where the noise was coming from. Of course this was after 2 hours of play in Skyrim so it's not like the Pro is a jet engine or anything the minute you turn the system on.

Slappy McGee2694d ago (Edited 2693d ago )

To everyone disagreeing, here's an example from a while ago when i was playing. This is 20 minutes into turning the system on and playing The Last Guardian.

http://sendvid.com/3pyu3n6v

https://sendvid.com/67yqcsd... (12 feet away. Turn volume up to max)

Post video proof of my Pro actually making noise and get downvotes. There's some fucking idiots on this site....

Aenea2693d ago

Mja, there also have been more recent non-Slim PS4's which were a lot quieter... I had a launch model PS4 and it was LOUD, way fricking LOUD when playing certain games, even just a game on pause it would be loud, so loud that if I went to do something else for even 30 min I rather put it in sleep mode instead.

Now with the Pro it's so quiet I will keep it on...

gbsrnctaln2694d ago

Silent compared to my old ps4 which sounded like a jet engine.

DashArrivals2694d ago

Dude, the sound of the PS4pro is a non-issue.

no_more_heroes2694d ago

It's less important to me (even though I do notice it while playing) and more to do with my family. Playing FFXV a couple of days ago and my little sister was wondering what was making so much noise.

I want something less noticeable when its on so that I can play it in my room using remote play while she's in the living room where she likes to study (she's in med school).

ONESHOTV22694d ago

i dont know about the original PS4 but the pro is some what quite when you insert a disc it does make a lot of noise but goes away within a minute or so

SouljAx3602694d ago

Using Uncharted 4 as benchmark since it made my old PS4 crazy loud, it's much quieter. It's by no means silent though.

kraenk122693d ago

It's not as near silent as the last 1200 series model but more silent than the launch model I'd say.
