Cold in July is a new crime thriller from director Jim Mickle and stars Michael C. Hall, Sam Shepard, and Don Johnson. It's a dark and sometimes violent indie neo-noir movie, and it's pretty good. It's about a rather timid man named Richard (Hall) who shoots a burglar in his home in self defense, and, consequently, becomes stalked by the burglar's ex-convict father (Shepard) bent on revenge. I won't spoil what happens, but it soon becomes apparent that something more corrupt and sinister is happening.
The story is interesting, has a few twists, and really gets dark in the second half, although towards the end there were some questions that went unanswered. The acting is good and the three leads have good camaraderie once they all get together later in the movie. Also, the movie takes place in 1989, so it has a killer 1980s synth score.
Overall, Cold in July is an engaging noir movie with a good story, a few twists, and a dark mood. It's in theaters now and on demand, so I recommend checking it out.
I give Cold in July a B+
