FIlmWatch's 50 Favorite Directors

JL|4687d ago |Blog Post|14|

The votes have been counted and the results are in. FilmWatchers voted for their favorite directors and now I've compiled that into a "50 Favorites" list. Many great directors are represented here with a wide range of talented filmmakers.

It proved to be a very tight race as the top three were neck and neck. The winner proved to get the edge and win by a mere 1 vote, however. So, FilmWatch's favorite director of all-time is none other than...Christopher Nolan, the mastermind behind "Memento", "The Dark Knight" and many others, including next year's highly anticipated "The Dark Knight Rises".

As I told you, the race was close, though. As a result, we ended up with a tie for second. The iconic Steven Spielberg and the cult favorite Quentin Tarantino both finished with 58 votes. Rounding out the top five are Peter Jackson and James Cameron.

The full list of favorite directors can be found below.

Also, congratulations to the winners who will receive a Blu-ray copy of the Extended Cut of "Sucker Punch":

I agree about Christopher Nolan, glad to see John Lasseter on the list.

JL4687d ago

Nolan has definitely earned his spot among the greats, I believe. He'll go down as one of the all-time greats.

There are some I'd definitely disagree with here *cough*Shyamalan*cough* or Cameron's position. Or even someone like Blomkamp who had a nice movie with District 9, but one feature film is hardly enough to warrant such a spot for a virtually unproven director.

Overall, though, quite a list of some great directors that are included here.

Soldierone4685d ago

Ugh I saw James Cameron up there and wasn't too happy with that lol...Especially since JJ Abrams is so close to the top ten.

drdistracto7074686d ago

In my opinion, Nolan should not be number one
maybe top 20, but not top dog

also, switch out John Lasseter with Pete Docter or Brad Bird

and the hell is Paul WS anderson on there for? the only Paul Anderson that should be on there is Paul Thomas Anderson

Nes_Daze4686d ago

John Lasster for Pete Doctor would be good since Doctor made Wall-E and Up, two amazing movies. As for Brad Bird, I wasn't really a fan of most his movies.

Trey Parker didn't make the cut and M. Night Shyamalan did? Boo.

Sahil4686d ago (Edited 4686d ago )

Great List.. it can be used as a reference for people who are thinking of direction as career :)

Such a huge difference between.. third and fourth spot tells you the directors in top 3 are equally number one.

Where's Judd Apatow..lol

-MD-4685d ago

Judd Apatow definitely should have made the cut. I completely passed over him when making my choices.

He makes solid movies.

Nolan has too many glaring faults to be #1 but I can't say I'm not surprised.

No Sydney Lumet or Ingmar Bergman? And Michael Bay ranks 13...blasphemy!

JL4686d ago

I voted for Lumet and was disappointed he didn't make it as 12 Angry Men is one of my top 5 favorite.

Michael Bay making the list doesn't bother me nearly as much as someone like Shyamalan making the list. Though, Lumet should be included over the majority of these.

Though it is important to remember: this is favorite, not best. Also, the demographic of this site would indicate that most weren't around for Lumet's prime.

-MD-4685d ago

I've heard you mention Lumet before but he's a director I don't know by name.

Just checked out his IMDB page and I see he did 'Find Me Guilty' I really enjoyed that film and it actually showed Diesel have some range. Most of his films are from back in the day so me being 20 I guess I'm not too shocked that I didn't know of him.

I assume 12 Angry Men is his best work?

Defectiv3_Detectiv34685d ago

Sydney Lumet is the man, personally Network is my favorite but Dog Day Afternoon and Serpico are all must sees. The Verdict is one of my favorite courtroom dramas - one hell of a perfomance by Paul Newman to boot.

JL4685d ago

Agreed. Lumet definitely is pretty awesome. I definitely have to put 12 Angry Men as my favorite of his. The Verdict would also easily make my Top 10 courtroom dramas. Might be Newman's best performance ever, I think.

As you mentioned, though, Network is good as well as Dog Day and Serpico. Though, I kind feel Serpico has lost some of its value/impact these days in a time where corrupt cops are a common issue and have been so widely addressed in movies.

Another to add is Murder on the Orient Express.
