How Xbox Has Become the Most Consumer-Friendly of the Big Three

Microsoft and Xbox have become the most user-friendly video game console manufacturer, ahead of Nintendo and Sony, by taking some important steps.

Lmao media pushing ms and nothing about new games. Spencer took over the first year of xbox one and didn't focus on games. Media gives the guy a free pass.

AngelicIceDiamond1521d ago

Maybe because they're not ready to talk about new games yet?

CaptainHenry9161521d ago (Edited 1521d ago )

Just like every decade. I'm sure they'll talk about Halo and Forza though

gangsta_red1521d ago

So the talk of Playgrounds new game, the sequel to Hellblade, a new Battletoads, new Ori...those don't count?

mandf1521d ago (Edited 1521d ago )

Diamond xbox one has been out 6 years, tell me how many quality exclusives they put out. A whole gen wasted on broken promises. Phil Spencer's promises.

1521d ago
CaptainHenry9161521d ago (Edited 1521d ago )

@gangsta_red

Ori is a multiplatform game now. I got it on my Switch and I'm sure the sequel will be too. Hellblade was mediocre at best. Good graphics though. Battletoads wouldn't make me invest in an Xbox and nothing to get to excited about. They need something bigger and better. I'm still waiting for that new AAA exclusive that stands out on Xbox other than Halo and Gears which I find stale and no longer fresh now imho.

@Vasto

We're talking about exclusive games and not specs. Last time I checked the ONE X had better specs than the PS4 pro and nothing changed.

@Steve

I got a high end PC for better looking games and multiplats but I still like first party exclusives. What really changed is that the PS4 still passed the 100 million mark because of their first party and second party exclusives and the X stayed below the 45 million mark to be honest. I wonder why?

gangsta_red1521d ago (Edited 1521d ago )

@Captainhenry

But we're talking about New Games, not games you personally don't like.

See the difference?

It's always fun to see the same weak "no games" comment turn into "they don't count because I don't like those games" type arguments.

CaptainHenry9161521d ago (Edited 1521d ago )

@gangsta_red

Same weak no game comment you say? That's one of the reason the Xbox one is losing this generation because of weak and no diverse exclusives. But I'll take your word for it

sampsonon1521d ago (Edited 1521d ago )

MS has not talked about new AAA games for 4yrs except for a flight sim, Gears, Forza and Halo. It's like they gave up.

Sony has 3 major AAA games coming out in the finale yr of this gen's cycle.
They should be the ones getting praised.

AngelicIceDiamond1521d ago

@Mand It'll be cross gen games.

"Series X is doomed no unique next gen games!"

sampsonon1521d ago (Edited 1521d ago )

ps5? lol were still enjoying ps4 games. The Last Of Us 2, Ghost Of Tsushima, and FF7.
What does MS have coming out this yr? Flight simulator?
Sony rocks, and that's why they will always sell more consoles than MS.

1520d ago
rainslacker1520d ago (Edited 1520d ago )

You mean June of 2019? Or 2018? Maybe 2017? I mean, these were all years where I was told to wait until E3 to hear about all the great stuff they were going to be bringing in the near future. I guess in June of 2020, we'll hear about all the games that will come out at an indeterminate time in the near, or maybe far future. Then we just have to wait for that right?

I've been told it takes 2-3 years, maybe 4 to make AAA games. I was told it takes time to get things organized. Well, I've been told these things for more than 2-3, or even 4 years, and if it took 2-3, or even four years to finally get finalized, does that mean waiting another 2-3, or even 4 years to finally get the games they promised me back in year one when they had one billion invested in new games?

Do you really honestly believe that it's reasonable, as a consumer, to wait 2-3, even 4 years to finally get the content that is expected of a console maker. Within 5 years of releasing the PS1, Sony had one of the strongest 1st party publishing houses in the world. This was up from what was a rather modest or average PC gaming sector mostly focusing on licensed properties. By the time the PS2 was released after PS1, Sony had created more new IP's, more GOTY nominees or winners, and more long lasting IP's, than MS has total IP's created in house. Of all their big IP's, the only two they actually created are Forza, and Fable. Gears and Halo they brought. Everything else is either brought, or is mid-tier.

Greatness awaits right? Too bad I don't, and good thing Sony didn't wait because I'd hate to have to be disappointed in them this gen.

The problem with waiting for the future, is that the future never comes, and MS hasn't proven they can bring the future into the present.

leejohnson2221520d ago

Do you get paid by ms to push their marketing and brand? It's amazing to me how hard people who support one corporation can't stop talking about the one they hate, isn't that a mental condition? I get it you love ms and I'm sure they will do just fine but even they say they are not competing with Sony so it's all good

You listed Gamepass games in January & February that I've played already & they're old. The list you made for future releases are indie/arcade like AA games. The only AAA exclusive in your list is Halo Infinite which has no confirmed release date. When it comes to Playstation AAA exclusives Sony just released Dreams this month which is doing great with great reviews. This March is Nioh 2 & Persona 5:Royal. April is the huge FFVII:R & May is TLOU2. I personally don't care about old games on Gamepass because any old game released there I've most likely played already day one. Any game that releases day one that I'm interested & eager to play I have purchased with cash because I work & I don't have to wait for it to be on Gamepass. Again what AAA exclusives are releasing on the XBO throughout 2020? Any AAA exclusives releasing this Spring & Summer or even this Fall??

Have fun playing all those games when their servers or your internet is down since it will have to confirm you still are allowed access at some point when using the service. This is what MS wanted all along since the original announcement of the XBO. They don't want you to physically own the games anymore. Once enough people stick with game pass, I bet you physical copies will be no more. They are just doing exactly what they wanted just in a different way that looks pro consumer. Thankfully ill have a PS5 and my PC so i can enjoy everything available and if my internet or network services are down, ill still be able to play plenty of games on my PS5 or PC.

The fact you have to literally lie to try and argue shows that your whole points are weak.

Game Pass is cool, but to try and count the games on there as "new" is streching.

"What games do they have coming and can I play them through a digital service where I dont have to spend $65 on each game? LOL"

None because Sony don't need a game pass service as gamers actually want to buy their games.

What Xbox game is coming that is soooooo good that gamers actually want to buy it even if its on game pass.

The answer? Well same as the answer to your question.

"What AAA games are coming and can I play them through a digital service like Game Pass where I do not have to spend $65 on each game?"

What AAA games are leaving GP?

Sony spend plenty of money on studios to make games, Dreams is the perfect example. You would never get a game like that from MS.

And again Sony don't NEED it, game pass is MS reaction to getting destroyed by Sony.

Game Pass wouldn't exsist if MS were top dog. So in reality, Sony and PlayStation fans should take credit for Game Pass, because without them MS probably wouldn't of made such a desperate play for good will.

“Most consumer friendly”
Pushed play anywhere... except for their titles that would actually sell like mccc or gears 5.
Lied repeatedly or misled per capabilities with false advertising or the promise of “cloud power”..
Has not made a new AAA ips in 9 years and counting... of which is HIGHLY needed for their additional subscription service in order to sustain its relevance. Putting weight into third party games that are under contract will not do it.
Spends more money with their media partners trying to push agendas or false hope while not doing anything productive within the gaming community..
Then the cherry on top... you HAVE to pay to access free to play games.

I said the other day when the first war cries starting showing up... Microsoft is paying for recognition while not earning it and their exact same shills in these sites keep pushing the same ol song as if no one can tell. 🤔

ReadyPlayer221521d ago (Edited 1521d ago )

Lied repeatedly about the power of the cloud? I love the internet, absolutely NO research is done before spewing nonsense.
Microsoft Flight Simulator literally uses the cloud to render objects far away because the game is SO massive and detailed that high end PCs would explode trying to play it. xCloud uses the cloud to allow a 4 year old TABLET, to play Halo MCC at 720p. At least get your facts straight.

Knushwood Butt1520d ago

^

High end PCs would explode?

You should work in XBOX PR division.

rainslacker1520d ago

MS lied about the impact that the cloud would have on the consoles, and game design itself this generation. As a proof of concept, they did show that the idea of cloud is workable. Not by a measure that makes people that excited, but still proved it works as a concept.

@ready

Yes, lied. Unless you can show me how the cloud made the xbox many times stronger than it actually was. How cloud compute was going to completely change the way games were designed this generation. To date, the cloud has had absolutely no impact on the power of the console, and they showed that the local hardware is still limited by its design. They overstated the extent to which cloud would be used.

Cant really spin that into anything to make MS look good, and I was one of the people telling people that what ms was talking about was technically possible to some level, but I still called it that cloud compute was going to be irrelevant for this generation.

They’ve announced more next gen games than anyone already

rainslacker1520d ago (Edited 1520d ago )

Bethesda is equal to them right now. Count of two. Some space game and a new Elder Scrolls game.

Other games they announced are cross gen games. In fact, all games released in the first 1-2 years of the XSX lifetime are going to be cross gen games with the X1.

So technically.....MS hasn't announced a single next gen game, just games that will be playable on the XSX.

Food for thought...or spin it if you like.

Unless we're changing the metric of what is considered a next gen game now. I can never keep up with what metric is used to accommodate Microsoft's mediocrity. It's like they work off the premise of everyone gets a trophy just for participating. If so, my apologies. I often forget that MS has a lower standard to adhere to.

Muzikguy1521d ago

What's interesting is how anti consumer they were at the beginning of this gen but now are all of a sudden worthy of high praise. What about the companies that didn't go down that anti consumer road?

Atom6661521d ago

Technically they never went don't that road themselves, right?

They announced plans in mid-2013 that we disliked and we gave them shit about it. They went to market without them, but we reminded them of their mistakes every chance we got.

Now they're doing things we can praise. It's not really all of a sudden when we're approaching 7 years later here. I don't know how else to look at it.

You can perpetually hate on a company for its past stupidity, but there's too much to go around for me. If I really kept up that kind of energy, I could rant all day about how MS, Sony, and Nintendo have made poor choices for consumers over the decades.

Praise the positive moves and hope others follow suit. To answer your question: Sony has been praised for years now for what they did with PS4. It's not like that goes away just because someone who was thoroughly beaten into humility is now doing a lot of praise-worthy things.

gangsta_red1521d ago

They changed all their policies to become the most user friendly out of the three now...not THEN, we're talking about now.

What about the companies that haven't been providing as many user friendly features and options now? You know like this article is talking about.

rainslacker1520d ago (Edited 1520d ago )

I don't think anyone went truly anti consumer. The term has been used the wrong way for years now. A business decision is not necessarily anti consumer just because it doesnt completely benefit the consumer.

I'd even say that ms with the xbox, has never really been that anti consumer to the point they deserve unending criticism for it.

Both companies have some consumer unfriendly policies, which are worth criticizing.

rainslacker1520d ago

I think actual results of that attempt of theirs was enough punishment for them.

I do believe they should be praised for the good things they've done this gen. It's not all bad by any means. It's just that the most important thing, which is games, they've failed miserably on, and their attitude towards that failure is overly nonchalant or they go on about how great they are, which just makes those disappointed with them look at them as if they're narcissist who think their sh*t don't stink....because that's generally how they behave when talking about themselves, or their performance.

Pretty sure there new studios are hard at work on games.

CaptainObvious8781520d ago (Edited 1520d ago )

I'm sure they are very hard working on games, but why did they only start 6 months ago instead of, lets say, I don't know... BEFORE THE START OF THE GENERATION???!!!

And considering MS past history, it can't be assumed any of the games are going to be any good.

NeoGamer2321521d ago

I will agree that MS had a horrible generation first party game wise.

When Spencer took over first party was a mess. They didn't have many games and the ones they did have were of questionable quality. Since then, Spencer went and shutdown the junk and junk studios, and then went on a rebuild of the first party pretty much from the ground up. That took time.

As for consumer-friendliness MS has been the one pushing this generation. Backwards compatibility pushed by MS, the pro controller pushed by MS, the adaptable controller pushed by MS, cross play last gen was pushed by Sony but this generation it is MS, GamePass has set the bar for game subscription services, and MS has improved the XB OS 10-fold from day one. What has Sony or Nintendo outside of their games to become more consumer friendly?

Tedakin1520d ago

They've bought a bunch of studios. Games take time. With Gamepass for a dollar, cross platform play etc... they are by far the most consumer friendly company. Sony made you guys rebuy all your games to get updates like Last of Us and God of War 3. Xbox updated everyone's games free.

P_Bomb1520d ago (Edited 1520d ago )

“ Sony made you guys rebuy all your games to get updates like Last of Us and God of War 3.“

Wait a minute, you talking about TLOU: Remastered from 2014? The same year Xbox 360 and Xbox One had two different versions of Titanfall and Forza Horizon 2? Pretty sure buying Titanfall on 360 didn’t crossbuy you the X1 copy. Neither did GTAV, MGSV, AC4, Destiny.

extermin8or1520d ago

@vasto so I think you need to be corrected here. Firstly x cloud is a game streaming service right? Well then ps now as you keep referring to it is the game streaming service that has been out on playstation for literally years at this point. Playstation plus is the service that provides 2-3 free games a month ontop of access to online play etc. This month we recieved bioshock collection and sims 4 not and last month the uncharted collection and I cant remember what the other game was. Anyway they are old games nost of us have already bought if we wanted to play them. Most of the titles you mention people already own and can be purchased with large discounts off the psn store or for pc - gamepad works on over anyway doesnt it? So why purchase an xbox..... people have been asking you to name new games releasing on xbox not old games rereleasing on game pass.

TheTony3161520d ago (Edited 1520d ago )

@Vasto

I bet you don't even know what most of these features do.

Xbox is poised to dominate. You haven't heard?

gamer78041520d ago (Edited 1520d ago )

Good redirection, but this article is about being consumer-friendly... not about upcoming games which is a different topic. IMO MS has done a pretty good job the last few years on this. Its very easy to get ahold of someone at microsoft to talk to or on the phone if support is needed. They also have an official discord channel and keep players up to date via twitter etc on any support issues or new annoucmenets. Nintendo and Sony have a long way to go in this regard at least.

RazzerRedux1521d ago

My "resentment" towards Xbox has always stemmed from the lack of first party games. I harped on it forever and frankly, I believe I was absolutely right to do so. Having said that, MS has turned the corner and is on the verge of a gaming renaissance, imo. I like this newer version of MS and Xbox gaming especially ever since they have improved their relations with PC gamers after practically ignoring us for so long. Doesn't mean I agree with everything they say and do. If anything, though, I think Phil Spencer has been able to repair a lot of the goodwill that was lost this gen.

gangsta_red1521d ago

I definitely agree. The criticism towards Xbox not providing as many first party games was absolutely warranted. And I think them buying new studios is part of them turning things around...even if it's more to do with providing content for Game Pass. But hey, that still doesn't take away the fact they fixed one of their major problems a lot of gamers complained about.

1521d ago
SyntheticForm1520d ago

"My "resentment" towards Xbox has always stemmed from the lack of first party games."

That's really 'it' isn't it? That's the biggest issue and any objective observer would tell you that Xbox has been seriously lax on first party output this generation. It's just the truth.

Xbox's first party output for the future remains to be seen, but I'm not worried. I understand concerns and appreciate those types of arguments but I'm just not running around all gloom and doom. I think it will get better.

I too like the Xbox/PC merging and find it quite positive.

Rhythmattic1520d ago

Quite Simply... Xbox now no longer be referred to as console hardware, its definition has changed.....
They couldn't ever beat Sony in the console market, They've moved the Goal posts... for better or worse....
The New "Console" really is for those hard core console gamers, I personally think MS dont care about units sold, Its subscriptions...
Be great if they released their games to run locally on Linux supporting Vulcan...

extermin8or1520d ago

@gangsta except they have not yet fixed it. They promised to fix it start if the generation after a lax second half to the gen before. So why would people believe them now. No they need to produce the goods then we will see.... Also the merging of pc and xbox meaning most exclusives release on pc basically means they arent exclusive and I don't see why you wouldn't Dave alot if money get a gaming PC to play those on and a ps5 and be able to play exclusives and third party titles wherever.

The hell? Seriously what did Microsoft do this gen? Don't say anything about next gen. It is all talk so far. X1 got smashed this gen. There's a reason.

rainslacker1520d ago (Edited 1520d ago )

So wait. When I said years ago that people don't like MS as a whole, because of their history, and I get Obscure vehemently opposing that notion, and you sometimes chiming in, you actually agree with me? Or did that whole conversation and talking points slip your mind when MS was making it's move into PC gaming in an attempt to take on Steam?

Anyhow, yeah, maybe it's pent up history with MS. But, MS has plenty to be critical of this generation without bringing their history into it. The biggest being their game output, and for me personally, I dislike Spencer's constant talk, and his attitudes about his own, or MS performance this gen.

They've done a lot of good things too, and they should be credited for those things, so to break my common model of criticism, I'll state what I think they did right.

-A BC solution. A clever way to get around licensing issues, and they deserve props for coming up with it.
-Game pass is good in its current form, and while there is room to pontificate on what it can mean for the long term, there is no real reason to dislike it at the moment, and things change over time so no worst case scenario is set in stone.
-The adaptive controller. Probably one of the best advancements for accessibility to ever come out of Redmond, and a huge step towards the standardization of such things to help improve developer adoption of such features.
-Despite my lack of interest in the mid-gen model going forward, I think they deserve major props for the design and execution of the X1X hardware.
-I'm glad they were open to cross play finally, although lets not discuss it, because we know how we both stand and this is about what they did right.
-I'll give them the elite controller. it's a nice design, at is probably a reasonable price for such thing.
-Their big games they have released are actually pretty good overall, if not excellent. Even a lot of their indie level 2nd party productions have been pretty good. Quality was never really MS 1st party issue this gen. It was always quantity.
-Their OS updates have been hit or miss, but kudos for trying to improve.
-Cross buy inititives. They didn't invent it, but good they are adopting, and adapting it to their own business model.

I'll even give them props for continuing to support this gen with games coming out on XSX as well. It's essentially cross gen, but if they can make the games work on current gen without having to sacrifice features of the next gen hardware, then that's a good thing for the users of current gen hardware. The other side of the coin we've discussed elsewhere, and I'm sure we'll discuss again, but it's a different argument.

Probably some other things I'm missing, but there it is.

Unfortunately, none of those good things make up for their performance this gen, and I'm not so free with supporting companies because they may do better in the future. If and when they fix the only major problem I have with them this gen, and show they can consistently deliver games, then I'll start to consider if they are deserving of my dollar.

While Xbox may not have that many first-party games currently, they have been pretty good to its consumers this gen (except the xbox one launch, what a disaster that was).

LM12131520d ago

bro, that was atrocious . I had a 360 before that and I was like.....nope. no thanks

CuVe1520d ago

Yeah... Like 24hour check in and mandatory internet connection and no game share at the beginning? If its not for Sony, consoles would be dead. Short memory xbox fans in denial.

DCarnage1519d ago

Sony had the same type of system patented. I'm guessing that after Microsoft had such bad publicity from their stage event, Sony backpedaled and left that little tidbit out and scrapped it. They then went on stage after MS and left that part out. I'm glad they did, I hate anti-consumerism. Although, the Xbox player toxicity went down tremendously from the 360 to the One because the "dude bros, I did your mom" peeps got a PS4.

Because they went the anti consumer route early on in the XBO's life and it came back to bite them on the ass for years to come which lead to them reversing a lot of their positions.

UnholyLight1520d ago

It didn't help they had Mattrick literally say "Yeah well, theres an Xbox 360 for that" when it came to the outcry of Always Online and DRM or whatever. That was the final nail in the coffin even when they tried to fix their messaging and totally change the ship by moving on from him and retooling what the Xbox One was going to be. That definitely had a long lasting impact!

Rhythmattic1520d ago (Edited 1520d ago )

That was pretty much the equivalent of Sony on the PS3 launch saying the price is high, but if you want it youll work a second job to get it....

In both cases, Its a WTF moment.

In both cases, so out of touch.

extermin8or1520d ago

@rythmattic yep both anti consumer and out of touch. Only difference is the sales suggest that infact some people literally may have done just that and bought a ps4 anyway because it launched a year after xbox 360 and sold online with previous console launches and ended the generation kneck and kneck with xbox despite having had a year less on the market.

UnholyLight1520d ago

Yeah even as a kid I remember the "$599 USD !"(RIP Canada pricing). It actually just made it seem even more legendary when friends parents had bought them for them. My buddy's dad was a diehard Sony guy so he bought them both a PS3 which is insane.

I never got around to mass effect - I’m skeptical that it would hold up if I were to try it now

Downplaying every rendition of elves over a period of 70+ years? What kind of headline is that?

kythlyn7d ago

That and they're not that great. =_=; Game's too short to really get to know them.

"I won’t make that mistake again." It's impossible to that mistake again, so of course the write won't make it again.

VincentVanBro7d ago (Edited 7d ago )

LMAO what?! Every article that sings DD2's praises just seems off now that I've played it for myself. Its a mid game, 7/10 at best and that is generous. The elves are a joke too, much less interesting than say the Witcher 3's elves or Baldur's Gate 3's elves.
