Will next-gen hardware bring about as many advancements in gameplay as it does in visuals?

It depends on the developers. Naughty Dog, for example, said that they are going to raise the bar on gameplay with The Last of Us 2 and that is on current Gen hardware.

It comes down to game engines.. not so much the hardware..
Most game engines this gen from third party developers and the few titles Microsoft released were on ten year old engines with just more make up.

Sony spent this gen having their developers creating new engines. Polygon, naughty dog, guerrilla games, Santa Monica, etc all are ready to change things..

Sony has a vision too.
So that is a guaranteed investment because they are ready and third party games play on their console..

Microsoft... has a great marketing team And 9 years of nothing. 🤷🏻‍♀️😂

Sony should let 3rd party use there engines, I also curious what JP devs gonna do.

Black blades
To an extent they already do. Naughty Dog and insomniac games have always been pretty open with sharing the tech they use publicly. GG shares the decima engine. Which made the new kojimagame death stranding. I think they don’t need to share the engines outside what benefits them. Why, not even because it gives Sony an advantage. But because if you have every game using Sony made engines and the tech specialized in them. It’ll be like how the unreal engine last gen got so stale and everyone started hating it half way through. With the moment ppl hearing a game was on the engine, you’d immediately think ohh no, not another generic game on that engine. This is why publishers and developers having unique engines is a great thing. DICE has a great engine that works great for Star Wars and Battlefield. But because the engine is made for that and large scale battles etc. It’s not as great when focused on smaller things and it isn’t a great engine for the average smaller game. When I see EA abuse the engine and put it on smaller games etc, I always immediately can tell and smh.
I just think companies need to be more willing to make there own engine. I think using and sharing some tech is the most that should be done. Like when insomniac did Resistance 2, the openly shared the water tech to let people use and improve.

That being said I would love a crack in time to be rereleased. That game was the greatest ratchet and clank of all time imo

Microsoft aren't that stupid to play the underdog with team blue , they know their stuff and can do their own things , you can't just assume things on Microsoft by being hypothetical , know their place.

Sony's API's and SDK allow for their tools to be integrated into 3rd party game engines or even publisher level game engines. A game engine doesn't have to be a specific game engine to use specific tools. It may require a bit of reworking of those tools.

In some cases, Sony does allow parts of their game engines to be adapted into other game engines, but most multi-plat games don't use them much because of the issues that come with porting to other systems, where Sony doesn't generally allow that code to work on other systems.

terstomp1522d ago

Its not only game engines. Its innovation in input as well. ie controller design. At the moment, the controller is going to be the same as it has been for the last 20 years.

Ps5 adaptive trigggers. Nuff said..

Also... I think "dreams" just raised it... Gameplay wise... And it's current gen.

gangsta_red1524d ago

A lot of changes we're seeing in current gen so late in these consoles cycles.

I suspect we won't see a lot of these gameplay "evolutions" with next until a later when developers have switched over full time to these consoles new specs.

TheOptimist1524d ago

Meh.... Don't think so. It depends on mainstream gamers. I mean CoD hasn't changed since 2005 and we have passed 3 generations. So it depends on how low the mainstream audience sets the bar this time as well.

mrmikew20181524d ago

So true, I mean we can only hope these developers push boundaries when it comes to gameplay.

So it’s a wait and see thing.

isarai1524d ago

At the end of the day it's up to the devs, but next gen console's SSD and Zen2 CPUs certainly gives them a much higher ceiling to work with.

Kribwalker1524d ago

The mid gen consoles reallly mitigated the difference from previous gen to upcoming gen. It won’t be the huge graphical leap and it will look more like something that would be available on current consoles with a graphic bump vs brand new experiences

It felt to me like the PS4pro is what the PS4 should have been from day one, I love this thing. But even with how powerful the One X is both the PS5 and Series X still seem like they'll be fairly dramatic upgrades I'm terms of capabilities. I guess we'll see soon enough but I don't think it's too off base to get a bit excited for these new machines.

Kribwalker1522d ago

oh definitely the upgrades that are coming are exciting, which is why i’ll upgrade from my OneX to a SX. I want better framerate, faster load times etc, i also bought an elite controller, i typically like to spring for the better version. I just don’t think the upgrades next gen at the start will wow us like the ps2 to xbox 360 or snes to saturn/og PS.
That’s why i see them taking about cross gen games, the architecture is there, they’re basically set spec PC’s now, with way less overhead. It won’t be too difficult for them to scale the games, and they can still tap the existing user base

mkis0071522d ago

The Zen Cpu alone will demolish those expectations, without even considering how ssd's as a standard will make it a two-headed attack.

Mark this post. The coming gen will show something game-play wise that couldn't begin to be worked in on current gen.

I keep thinking Portal, but on a much larger scope. Miles away instead of Meters.
