Dragon Age: Dread Wolf Rises Will Be Political And Celebrate Diversity, Says Narrative Director

"Following the reveal at this year’s Game Awards, gamers began looking up new info for Dragon Age: The Dread Wolf Rises. Some gamers ended up stumbling coming across the Twitter profiles of the developers working on the game while in search of new info." OAG says.

"Beastiality " the game

Eonjay1965d ago

OAG:
"Ultimately, though - all art is politics. It's just a hell of a lot easier to ignore it when those politics match up with yours"

This. Everyone else is just making stuff up pretending to be mad because they don't have the courage to get mad at something with substance.

bluefox7551965d ago (Edited 1965d ago )

@Eonjay Right?? Remember when we played through the fantastic God of War, and it was preachy, and hit us over the head about why men, straight people, and white people are bad? Couldn't get enough!

Eonjay1965d ago

In my Morpheus voice:
What if I told you that such a game doesn't exist?
You know the one preaching that men, straight people, and white people are bad
Nope. Nada. Not real.
Beware the person who trys to convince you that someone else is out to get you.

rainslacker1964d ago

Not all art is politics. Most games don't even try to push a political agenda at all, and they're fine. Even preachy games aren't necessary political.

I'm OK with games having a political message, so long as it actually delivers it in a fair manner. Even if it doesn't match my own opinion on the subject.

starchild1964d ago

@Eonjay

That isn't really true. The best art inspires thoughts and feelings but it doesn't beat you over the head with a particular message. Ya know, the way games were for a long time until these far left peddlers of identity politics started infesting the gaming industry.

My libertarian views don't really line up well with either conservatives or liberals on many issues, but until recently I never felt that any overt political message was being pushed in games. No matter what a person's political views were I think we could all enjoy games and not feel like an opposing political agenda was being shoved down our throats. This doesn't mean that games weren't art back then or that they weren't fantastically engrossing and thought provoking. Because they were.

The fact is, no matter where someone might fall on the political spectrum, most of us, aside from far left extremists themselves, are absolutely fed up with the way these people have infiltrated the entertainment industry and constantly push their identity politics SJW agenda.

I'm a strong believer in individual freedom and I absolutely despise racism. People should be judged based on their qualities as individuals not based on whatever group they are perceived to belong to. Identity politics is the antithesis of this. I believe it is profoundly racist and divisive.

I don't see conservative agendas being pushed in such a blatant and annoying way in games. Where can I play a game, for example, that presents an anti-abortion message and beats you over the head with it over and over again?

UltraNova1964d ago

Starchild,

Great post!

May I add that this recent SJW push we see in games sometimes originates from the devs themselves as well, as a way to gain free publicity.

We just don't need to bite and it will die down.

Read the tweets. He just spoke common sense.

Article is clickbait.

annoyedgamer1965d ago

Read his twitter biography.

bluefox7551965d ago

His bio lists "He/Him" and "Leftist" after his profession. Imagine thinking your pronouns and political affiliations are that important. Clearly he's an ideologue. Ideologues are not good writers, ever.

Some of you need to let go of the idea that some games are trying to push a certain agenda.
You want to know what the agenda is? People.
Artists are allowed to express freely who surrounds them and who influence them the most, whether they are diversely ethnic, gay, trans, etc... Artists paint and sculpt based on what their environment is and how it has influenced them.
Some gamers live in such a small microcosm that they perceive their life experience as the "reality" for all.
Get out of your homes, or better yet create something of such public grandeur and watch it get criticized because it isn't someone else's reality.
You are not entitled to an opinion that should suppress someone's artistic endeavors. You want a game that represents your environment, then go out, buy it to support it. Allow others to enjoy more diversity in their games.

beulahland1964d ago

"Some of you need to let go of the idea that some games are trying to push a certain agenda."

Well, you are right about that. The games aren't really trying that.
The people who make them are.
Don't need to thank me for letting this clear to you.

Scissorman821964d ago

thats all fine and dandy, just remember that the people that ask the loudest for these things aren't actually buying the game.

Fullmetalevolust1964d ago

@Beuhlaland, not to seem ungrateful, thank you for replying (here's my thanks) but you brought nothing to the conversation. Just simpleton semantics that my 6th grade students know not to bring forward.
They learn to read for comprehension, debate both sides of the argument then reply based on the opinion they formed, often lead by research. To that, I'm grateful.
I hope this clears up things for you.
OT, games are made by people as you so coyly expressed who deserve the right to represent any walks of life they deem important. Often times, artists such as game creators/ developers use their surroundings (art, media, literature, etc...) to depict characters.
@Scissorman82, I buy a lot of games that do not represent me. I'll be damned if I allow my pre-conceived notions on a game stop me from the joy of finding new things I like. I'm not a woman, I play Tomb Raider.
I think the bigots have louder voices. As soon as there's a gay story line, it's pushing an agenda.
Some people don't allow others to be just that, people.

rainslacker1964d ago

Political by nature is agenda driven. Even if it doesn't resolve that agenda in a clear cut manner. The agenda may not be purposeful, as in, the author may not be trying to convince people that they should believe a certain way, but there is no way to separate a ideology from a political statement of some sort. The best that can be done is it can be represented fairly, and both or all sides of that ideology can be expressed.

More often than not in the case of games, it's not, because ideologies serve up good antagonist to fight about.

This particular game saying it's going to be political and celebrate divervisity could mean a lot of things. The diversity could be what makes it political. The politics could make a group of seemingly repressive people out there look bad, even if its not true. It could just be political because they're throwing in a bunch of diverse characters, which just makes it shallow.

Whatever it is, approaching a game such as this to try and make it political, as opposed to making a story which becomes better through political influence to grow the characters naturally in a way we understand, tends to make for weak stories.

CaptainObvious8781964d ago (Edited 1964d ago )

@Full

Your tired, old straw man argument that people are afraid of diverse characters is tired and old.

Are people like me afraid of women and races other than caucasian?

OR

Are we just sick of the pathetic forced 'diversity' that is virtual signalled as more important that the actual game it self so that all the racist and sexist sjw journalists can see what good developers they are and give them good reviews?

Why is tomb raider, with it's strong but flawed female protagonist, praised while battlefield V is seeing sales half that of it's predecessor and has become a meme?

You already know the answer to both those questions, so would you kindly drop your tired, old straw man argument.

beulahland1964d ago

@jakiah66 "So what are you saying exactly? That if a person has a career in gaming they aren't allowed to have the freedom to express their own human thoughts and opinions?"

You are trying to put words on my mouth. Try harder, sweetie.

Just another clickbait title.

King_Noctis1965d ago (Edited 1965d ago )

Uh oh...that mean we gonna see a prosthetic female mage.

PhantomS421965d ago

It's offensive that you didn't include that prosthetic female mage was also trans and gay! =p

CaptainObvious8781964d ago

Did you just assume zeh/zher/it's gender and not ask for correct pronouns before referring to zeh/zher/it!?!??!?!

I'm triggered!! /s

PumPum1965d ago (Edited 1965d ago )

Probably a muslim black transgender little person-mage.

Eonjay1965d ago

The blacks are coming to get you! Just kidding we don't give a fock about you. I'm sure neither do the muslims, the trans or the short people.

PumPum1965d ago

I did not say anything negative. It was only about diversity. Why are you hating?

1965d ago
Razzer1965d ago

I wouldn't be surprised if you have different options for sex and gender plus a plethora of pronouns to choose from.

carcarias1964d ago (Edited 1964d ago )

Oh dear. I'm sorry, but using the term 'mage' is problematic and triggering to me. Please use 'melee challenged', thank you very much!

Spurg1965d ago

If diversity in games bothers people then they should fix up. Red dead redemption 2 did it really well and bioware will achieve the same thing.

Dreamcatcher451965d ago

I don't think anyone would have even noticed in a game like this. It's just that people have grown tired of all the forcing of it. I'm a minority in my country and even I have grown sick of the constant diversity thing.

Kabaneri1965d ago

I dont remember any trannies in RDR2.

RememberThe3571964d ago

Token made an appearance as Lenny so they're good.

rainslacker1964d ago

Somehow, I have less faith in Bioware to approach this kind of thing with respect compared to R*. Bioware has historically made a big deal about this kind of stuff, and not really made it seem that natural. RDR2 just had it there, but didn't make a big deal about it. There's a marked difference between making it a political statement, and making it just part of a story, or part of a character which isn't the defining part of their character.

CaptainObvious8781964d ago

And yet people didn't have a problem with RDR2, did they spurg, did they?

Why is that, spurg? Why is that? Hmmm?

I am getting so sick and tired of your straw man arguments.
