Shadow of the Tomb Raider Review | Quarter to Three

Tom Chick - "Tomb Raider was personal because it was personal. But now it’s come full circle to yet another vapid videogame character muddling through bad writing, rote familiar gameplay, and fewer features than the last time. Wake me when the next reboot is here."

You know I'm gonna actually have to agree with this one the game and the entire 3rd gen series has felt like a shoddy uncharted clone.

81BX2015d ago

Some would say uncharted 3 was a shoddy uncharted clone

doggo842015d ago

Uncharted 3 Would be game of the generation on xbox.

paintedgamer19842015d ago (Edited 2015d ago )

Lol i guess some would say that, but some would also say Uncharted 3 is better than the best Tomb Raider EVER.

Doggo84:

He gets it!

Donnie812015d ago

I'd say the same about part 4.

81BX2015d ago (Edited 2015d ago )

@paintedgamer
I would agree with them, my point is it's really a matter of taste.
@donnie
I see a lot of people give uncharted 4 a thumbs down. I just cant find myself to give any of the uncharteds a bad wrap. Not even golden abyss. I thought other than the level where you play as drake in his teens (where they break into the house looking for their mom's book), the game is excellent.

Ratchet752014d ago

Change "some" by "no one" and you re
All good to go

What? You actually agree with a 2/10 score for SotTR? The game was ok. Its worked for what it was and its nowhere near as bad as this review its trying to make it look like.

Teflon022014d ago

I hope it's not really a 2 out of 10 I literally just bought it on sale for PC. I'll be pissed if I wasted that money (I wouldn't refund unless I know for sure it's trash so it's damn near impossible for me to gauge within the limits of the refund lol)

Uncharted clone? Smh. Even if so, it deserves nowhere near a 2. A 2 should be reserved for a freaking broken game full of bugs and crashes, which this game clearly is not.

CarlDechance2014d ago

Agree. There has been no indication that the game is horrible, much less horribly broken. This is a click bait review. Period.

badz1492014d ago

"A 2 should be reserved for a freaking broken game full of bugs and crashes..."

But but but...Fallout got all the 9s!

Gaming4Life19812015d ago

Wow. This game is not an uncharted clone and this game is no where near as bad as this site claims. Haters gonna hate though.

Dizzy115232015d ago

This plays nothing like Uncharted. There's actual real exploration in TR.

rainslacker2014d ago

I have criticisms of the new take on the series myself. I'm not going to get into them here. I wouldn't call them my favorite games, nor have I particularly looked forward to them since the first one. I know I"ll play them one day, including this one.

Now, I haven't played this one, but not by any stretch of the imagination do I think this game would come in at a 2. I'd reserve a score like that for a seriously broken game, and I know that this game isn't seriously broken. Maybe some of the oddities I've heard about it....like a progression system with no real combat, and bad AI at times, but the game play itself has been fairly solid throughout the series. The story is lacking, and I don't care for the new direction of Lara, but ultimately, the game on a technical level is pretty good.

Quick question...anyone else find it murky that EVERY article from Quarter to Three is submitted by Coolbeans who also happens to be a moderator on N4G?

Is Tom Chick Coolbeans? And shouldn't there be some sort of disclosure if a mod is funneling views to his other site via N4G whilst also generating clicks for N4G with outlandish reviews such as these?

I fully expect my comment to be marked as spam and my account to be banned for saying this but I'd like to add a disclosure that I'm just speculating here.

-So...I guess I obligated to chime in on this. The answer: I'm not Tom Chick, nor am I a part of Qt3 in any other capacity than as a user/lurker. And to bring even further disclosure on this: I've yet to contribute any written material outside of the user-designated section on any gaming website (N4G and vgchartz is where I frequent). The only times I've made a site-specific equivalent of a 'paid review' was on here for Night of the Rabbit and Sword of the Stars: The Pit years ago, which you can find in my blog section. I say 'paid review' like that b/c I received a free code.

Qt3 is just a site I visit from time to time and I submit their posted game reviews, which no one else bothers to. You can note the disparities in assessments & scores between our reviews for 7th gen ND games as some examples.

-"I fully expect my comment to be marked as spam and my account to be banned for saying this but I'd like to add a disclosure that I'm just speculating here."

No need to catastrophize the situation like this. I'll credit it as being a special circumstance that's tangentially connected to the topic at hand; having said that, I'm not going to look forward to coming back from work seeing this comment strand detracting from it either. To be clear: your account is not banned over this innocuous speculation and I believe I've disclosed enough info to quell it.

81BX2015d ago (Edited 2015d ago )

Suspect. I'll have my people look into this. Not during lunch hours though

MasterCornholio2014d ago

Alot of people don't like submitting reviews from QT3 for obvious reasons. But if the site is so bad then N4G would have banned it along time ago despite some of their reviews being overly critical to some games.

CarlDechance2014d ago

You obviously have a relationship with q23 as you have been posting their crap since they first began back in 2015.

https://www.quartertothree....

That's just over a month after their first review.

"I believe I've disclosed enough info to quell it. "

lol....seriously?

coolbeans2014d ago (Edited 2014d ago )

Well...went over as well as I could expect.

@81BX

Alright then? I feel like there's teasing going on here but I can't say for sure. :P

@CarlDehance

"You obviously have a relationship with q23 as you have been posting their crap since they first began back in 2015."

1.) You're wrong on the timeline of when Qt3 started, by about SEVEN years. https://www.quartertothree....

I certainly don't remember his name until well after signing up as a member on here.

2.) Being one of the early viewers of someone's site doesn't mean I have some 'connection' with them. Gaming enthusiast's circles tend to bring up all kinds of initially-obscure people that later become popular. I can recall a few sub-1000 subscriber YT gaming channels that've gone on to be popular for example. Doesn't mean I have a relationship.

"lol....seriously?"

Umm...yeah, seriously. My "gaming resume" in respect to credentials has been quite boring. I've turned down any offers to write freelance for other obscure sites in the past. Like, the vast majority of all blogging, reviewing, commenting (across all media) has been centered around vgchartz (main site and forums), N4G and other HAVAMedia-owned sites, and N4G forums since I became a member here ('09). Considering the idea of making a YT channel and/or blogspot in the future, but that's something I'm iffy about.

I don't think Tom Chick is coolbeans. Coolbeans write's reviews for 4G, and his writing style is better, and he can at least make salient points in his review. There are times when I feel he gets off track, and maybe too opinionated on things that don't have much to do with the game in those reviews, but never would I see him rate a game like TR as a two, as he is very capable of recognizing when games do things right on a technical level.

As far as if he's funneling clicks to a site, I couldn't say. I don't pay attention, but I know he used to be a frequent contributor to the site before he became a mod, and I don't think he backed off because of becoming a mod.

CarlDechance2014d ago (Edited 2014d ago )

There is obviously a relationship there. He is the only one posting the content and he is the first to defend the site when people call it out. Just check the history.

rainslacker2014d ago

Eh, I never paid attention to his comments on the site itself, so I couldn't make that judgement.

I've known coolbeans on this site for a long time. Long before he was a mod. He was always pretty fair in his comments, and made really good comments, which he doesn't do as much anymore.

Its worth noting that some sites only have one person posting their content, and beans justifies all sort of content on this site because it doesn't break the rules.

I really don't want to sound like I'm defending him here, because I really haven't paid attention to him on this matter. But I think maybe some more evidence is warranted before calling him out.

That being said, I still hold firm that he isn't Tom Chick. The writing style is just too different.

coolbeans2013d ago (Edited 2013d ago )

I appreciate the compliment and insight of my reviews. And, while I understand you're not actively trying to defend me without knowing all the details, I also appreciate it. In respect to CarlDechance's "first to defend the site" accusation, I'd say he's correct in personifying it in that way (though the logic to saying that equals a "relationship" is tenuous at best). It's easier for people to fathom a conspiracy of me secretly being a reviewer they vehemently dislike instead of me simply being some joe who respects his work and shares it on my go-to platform.

Ironically enough, the vast majority of my defense put up for him is something I wanted to point out in your comment:

"... but never would I see him rate a game like TR as a two, as he is very capable of recognizing when games do things right on a technical level."

Well, that's not really what he's going for though. Technical proficiency doesn't influence his hate it/love it scale and I don't think it should. *insert deeper explanation here*

^That right there is what you're going to find in the majority of my defensive comments of Qt3. And I briefly mentioned why in one of my past blogs: https://n4g.com/user/blogpo...

Having said all that, I genuinely forgot some important things from my first two comments that I want to relay to you, publicly, so I don't get accused of hiding anything. It'll be open for anyone wanting to come back through and you'll personally know the fullest extent of...whatever "relationship" I have with the guy (outside of me posting link to all his reviews on N4G). So here's an addendum to my previous comment:

-I follow him and several other game reviewers on twitter
-I can specifically remember two instances of publicly discussing something with him via twitter:
+recommending Oxenfree to him when he asked what to play over a weekend or night (can't remember which)
+a brief conversation regarding Hell or High Water (movie)

There you go. Exclusive access to everything I can ever recall between me and him.

rainslacker2013d ago

Whether he was going for, it's a review with a score attached. Since technical proficiency is very important to the quality of a game, it seems that it should make up a rather significant portion of the score, because anything else beyond that tends to be very subjective.

Yay or Nay type reviews are fine, if someone wants to make assessments in such a black and white way, but leave the score out of it. There is nothing saying that reviews have to have scores, and not attaching a score, means someone actually does have to read it to know how the reviewer felt about it. When people see a score like this, they just make the assessment that the reviewer is being unfair, and the content of the review itself is usually not even considered.

coolbeans2010d ago

Well...I can follow that line of logic to a point. I guess the thing that gets me is trying to meet someone halfway; in this case, Qt3's template is just "Hey! I focus on rating games like one would on Netflix's scoring system. Just like technically-sound movies are capable of being hated so too can that apply to games." When you walk into those reviews understanding that, the 1/5 or 2/5 complaints just don't register with me anymore.

I know that doesn't cover what could be the full extent of our discussion on this (or your points in most recent comment). I just wanted to give a brief acknowledgment of your response. B/c my main focus is on the suspicion of being Tom Chick, or personally knowing him which this has evolved to; then again, now I'm dealing with another accusation of having ANOTHER alt on here which I can't defend since I've spent all my comments there already. I guess this is going to be a theme on here for me. -__-

The Tomb Raider Survivor Trilogy's Take on Lara Croft Deserved More Recognition

The Survivor Trilogy was a drastic reimagining of Lara Croft and Tomb Raider, and it provokes changes for the character that are truly fantastic.

gamerant.com
isarai465d ago (Edited 465d ago )

Deserves less IMO, i think the 1st in the new trilogy was a perfect 1st step for the new direction. The next 2 games were half steps at best. Not only that, every character in the series including Lara is just annoying and doesn't make sense in terms of motive, like yes they have a motive, but none of it seems proportional to the lengths they are willing to go through for it. The most annoying thing is every one of the games say "become the Tomb Raider" yet 3 games later and we're still not there? No thanks. Then there's the mess of the 3rd game, massive skill tree that serves almost no purpose as there's literally only like 3-4 short encounters in the whole game, and they took till the 3rd game to finally manage some decent puzzles even remotely close to previous games in the series. Nah, the trilogy infuriated me to no end as a long time fan of the series, i hope we get better going forward cause that crap sucked.

Army_of_Darkness464d ago

The first in the trilogy was my favorite. I thought they were going into the right direction with that one until the second one came out and seemed like a graphical downgrade but the gameplay was okay. As for the Third, Graphics were really nice but it was kinda boring me to death with its non-stop platforming and exploring with not enough action! Well, for me anyway...

DeathTouch464d ago

Graphics on the 3rd one were abysmal. It’s more colorful and has more variety, but everything else was a noticeable downgrade.

The more open world with NPC quests was also handled very poorly, to the point I missed Angel of Darkness.

thesoftware730464d ago

I know it is your opinion, but she did progress as a character in each game, she even got more muscular and seasoned.

That is the thing, people first complained that there was not enough platforming and actual tomb raiding in the first and second games. Shadow remedied that and kept the combat elements.

3-4 encounters? huh? did we play the same game? there was plenty of combat and, the skill tree did matter, like being able to hang enemies from trees, set explosives traps on bodies, being able to counter, and that are just a few of the combat skills. The skill tree also had things like being able to hold your breath underwater longer, crafting upgrades, zipline upgrade, and climbing upgrades that all changed how you can approach situations.

Not knocking your opinion, but we definitely had different experiences. I had 98% completion on the shadow.

SoulWarrior464d ago (Edited 464d ago )

Sorry but i'm with him about the low number of encounters, the game throws loads of weapons and skills you're way with a comparatively low amount of places to actually use them, so they felt under utilised.

-Foxtrot465d ago

Yeah...no

It was awful, for THREE GAMES it was "become the Tomb Raider" where she went back to square one after each game. Not to mention after a huge reaction of killing someone for the first time she then becomes Rambo straight after and goes on a slaughter spree without a single other reaction. Her development was all over the place.

She was whiney, weak and in later game a little arrogant and selfish

Oh and the voice actress compared to the previous ones was not as good

Lara Croft deserved better and while they are decent games as they are, we deserved actual Tomb Raider games, we could have had better survival games if they just stuck with the original Lara Crofts origin about her plane going down. Surviving 2 weeks in the Himalayas...I'd have liked to seen that, who knows what mystical threat she could have faced in the mountains or underground some secret concealed cave.

Tacoboto464d ago

I thought Shadow of the Tomb Raider had better gameplay than Rise, but it annoyed me the most of the trilogy when I stopped to think about the story.

It's like they deliberately decided to make her unlikeable and did nothing to make the character you're playing as likeable or have even one sign of humility.

SoulWarrior465d ago

2013 I thought was a fine entry, but Rise and especially Shadow were painfully mediocre follow ups imo, I really didn't like how selfish and angry her character was in those two.

Terry_B464d ago

No. Please forget the crap completely.

northpaws464d ago

First one was decent, played through it twice.
Second one was okay, played through it once.
Third one was really bad, tried twice a year apart, still can't get through the first two hours, it is just really bad.

thesoftware730464d ago

Honest question, what did you find bad about it? the opening 2 hrs of Shadow were fantastic imo.

The opening was very similar to the first 2, what did you find really bad?

Not looking for an argument, just an honest question.

Starman69464d ago

3rd one just didn't feel like a tomb raider game. Possibly because the development was passed to another development team. Big mistake! Microsoft killed tomb raider making the first game a timed exclusive. Never recovered after that.

please bring back voluptuous Lara and change her annoying voice for god sake!, I started playing all three games from my PS4, PS5 and PC (yeah found those dirt cheap in price), but still never finished a single one of them cause the main character is soooo damn annoying!, well at least for me. :D

NerdBurglars834d ago

You just sound like a teenager with too many hormones

MadLad834d ago (Edited 834d ago )

Half the comments section is acting like they made her this 0/10 looking character wearing seven layers of clothes.

The games were well reviewed. The new Lara would be a model in real world terms. If the biggest recurring issue is she wasn't just modelesque, but also abnormally large breasts and skin tight/virtually no clothing, that's just sad.

"She wasn't made to be the literal idea of a blowup doll. It's the PC police at it again."

Fntastic834d ago

That's probably most of the ppl on here tbh, many have atrocious grammar too so it makes sense. Guess their parents let them run loose on the internet.

H9834d ago

Honestly everyone here talking about her appearance is annoying, as if the game is perfect and just needs a fix in the character model and that's it, both people who are with and against her new design care more about how female character looks than her character

dumahim834d ago

and short attention span.

moriarty1889833d ago (Edited 833d ago )

That’s the whole problem….people like you calling out someone else for having an opinion about an original character design like Lara Croft’s. She was designed in a more sexy form and it was part of her look.It was also part of the attraction for many gamers who actually liked her for whatever way they may have. Nothing wrong with wanting her to resemble her original form at all. Unless you don’t like other people enjoying characters for what they are to them. That is the definition of close minded. This is video games after all. NOT reality.

Elantregaless833d ago

Why do you hate teenagers ?

bloop833d ago

I thought the reboot trilogy were good games, but I'd like to see the old, original Lara back too. I don't care what she looks like, but I'd like the character to go back to the assertive, confident and kick ass original character. All Lara seemed to do in the reboot games was complain, and the voice actor was painful to listen to.

TricksterArrow834d ago (Edited 834d ago )

I couldn't care less about Lara's boobs or lack of them. The game is just boring, and even the first, which is by far, the superior and most fun one of the bunch, is atrociously written. That campfire scene of Lara and her friend with a strange islander after she witnessed murder and was chased almost to death by another islander was so badly conceived it hurts my brain... Holy molly.

Get a better writter. It's that simple.

Modern trilogy based on a real-world woman for voice and design.

Older games based purely on imagination regarding design.

Yeah, censoring "women."

gamer7804834d ago (Edited 834d ago )

That is not really true or it’s misleading. All Lara Croft characters were based on imagination. None have been based off a real woman. Toby created Lara Croft to break stereotypes about females needing to be a damsel in distress. So he created her to and being tough and self reliant and can still be beautiful and attractive. There have been so many cosplays of all versions of Lara Croft so any could be a real world woman and is besides the point. But she has moved a bit further away from Tony’s original version and there are many who would like to see Lara return to form being all of those things.

At the very least give her her shorts, acrobatics and dual pistols back. That would be a start.

Christopher834d ago (Edited 834d ago )

*** All Lara Croft characters were based on imagination.***

Camilla Luddington was the base for both the voice and look of the new Lara. So, no.

@below: This is obviously about looks, not actions in-game. Your post is nonsensical as it relates nothing to the discussion. Let alone I said "for voice and design" and didn't say "for in-game combat and actions."

The back bending some of you are doing to try and have a point is ridiculous.

bunt-custardly834d ago

"based on a real world woman for voice and design".

You have got to be joking surely? Did you play any of the games? The feats this "based on a real world woman" accomplishes are fantastical from start to finish. I am glad you said "based" more like loosely based in a purely imaginative way.

gamer7804834d ago (Edited 834d ago )

Additionally, Sure they both had voice actresses, Kelley and Camilla, (personally preferred keeley) but they weren’t modeled specifically after an actual woman’s looks, just voice and mocap. ( ie your comment on design).

bunt-custardly833d ago (Edited 833d ago )

Obviously not Christopher. "Design" covers the entire spectrum as far as I am concerned, and in context of the article, quite relevant. You should have defined what you meant by "design" better. If you had said "looks" or "appearance" then there would be no confusion.

Christopher833d ago

Sure, bunt, sure. We're talking about a character, we obviously mean game design as well. Sounds logical to me.

Bathory666834d ago (Edited 834d ago )

I beat the trilogy, but the first reboot on ps3 was the best. Camilla luddington was amazing as lara. Rise and shadow were good, but something just felt off. They didn’t have the spirit of the reboot. Really hoping the next game is good and it moves forward.

LucasRuinedChildhood834d ago (Edited 834d ago )

I thought Camilla luddington's performance wasn't great, tbh. In real life, she sounds like an American doing a REALLY bad English accent (rather than the other way around) because she moved to America when she was young.

That also translates to the accent in the game. haha. It just didn't sound right at all and is obviously fake. The over-emphasis on certain words makes her sound ... at best strange, and at worst a bit dumb. The pronunciations are often wrong as well.

Honestly though, I could accept all that if the characterization and story were compelling (that's not her fault). I had no investment in the character.

I didn't play Shadow, but I thought these games tortured her without any real purpose. The GCI trailer for Rise acted like the game would delve into her psychological state (therapy session scene) which would be interesting but it never does. She doesn't feel like a fully developed character, she feels more like a prop for the game to mess with and gruesomely put through Mortal Kombat-style fatalities if you make a mistake and die. Let her be a person and give her some good dialogue.

These are also the only games where ludonarrative dissonance is obvious to me when I'm actually playing because the games draw attention to it.

Knightofelemia834d ago (Edited 834d ago )

I didn't mind the trilogy except for Shadow of the Tomb Raider the ending was honestly probably going to ruin it but it was shit. I mean Uncharted Lost Legacy had a better ending and it was a shorter game. Too make Lara great again you have to rebuild her from the ground up listen to fan input learn what works and what doesn't work and take it from there with her.

zsquaresoff834d ago

Make it more like the 1st game of the trilogy and don't make the map unnecessarily big with tons of collectibles.
And make Lara sexy again.

moriarty1889833d ago

Yes make her sexy the way she originally was. Nothing evil or wrong with that at all. She is a video game character after all ……..ffs it’s not a real person. Video games are meant to be for fun and for the imagination. This new anti sexy anti feminine movement in games against female characters who originally were made that way is ridiculous. People need to stop taking everything so serious and looking for problems with everything in life. That’s why we are at this point in gaming with characters like Lara.
