FMV says: "The unconventional qualities that make Damsels in Distress so different and - in some people’s eyes - so appealing, are also the ones that cause it to suffer. The film gets too tangled and caught up in its own web of wit, innocence and oddity, and after a while it strays into ‘tedious’ territory."
"Damsels is only Stillman’s fourth picture but he really needs to get his skates on if he’s going to overcome his shortcomings, but that’s only after he learns to accomodate a story concerned with coherance rather than quirk. He’s no Terry Malick, yet."
Stillman says: "My favourite side of the filmmaking process is just what we’re doing now. To talk to someone who enjoyed the film is the greatest pleasure that you can have. And it amuses me that there are these people who are reluctant to do publicity on their projects."
ClickOnline writes: "The new tone makes Damsels perhaps Stillman’s most fluid film yet, with the hyper-real quality allowing some interesting stylistic choices to sit more comfortably than the sometimes forced eloquence of earlier efforts. It really is a charming production, which builds towards a fantasy-ish finale that you’ll find hard to resist"
