I’m going to tell you right now that I was skeptical to the remake from the moment I heard about it. The initial trailer of the trailer secured my skepticism. I’ll tell you why. The 1990 hit was a huge success because of its over the top style. From the cosmetic and animatronic effects that stretched its budget to the over exaggerated acting, many aspects contributed to that amazing late 80s/early 90s feel without being too cheesy. When someone mentions 80s or early 90s action films, you think of hits such as Robocop, Predator, Rambo and Total Recall. These are just a few of the classically over the top movies that define that era of the silver screen. “But FlipDock” a fictional reader harks “they remade Charlie and the Chocolate Factory and that wasn’t terrible”. Well I would respond by stating that even though it wasn’t as good as the original it kept true to being a weirdly wonderful story with a wacky Willy Wonka instead of becoming something like a sombre movie with no musical numbers. The problem I have with the Total Recall remake is that the trailer makes the movie seem too serious with CGI hover cars and looks of intent from actors at all times. It looks more like a Mass Effect movie.
