Writer Jon Duryea says... "John Carter is based on the Basoom series written by Edgar Rice Burroughs. More specifically it is based on the first novel, A Princess of Mars, written back in 1917. Fans of the book will be disappointed to learn that the film only borrows the major plot points but goes its own route on the smaller stuff. Those that didn’t read the books will still be disappointed but for different reasons."
