MGM Takes A Loss On ‘Dragon Tattoo’ And Seeks Better Terms For Sequels

Deadline - If you think that The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo was a hit, then talk to MGM Holdings CEO Gary Barber. His company co-financed the film, and although it has generated about $231M at worldwide box offices he tells investors who own MGM’s unlisted shares that “it is below our expectations and we booked a modest loss.” The company wouldn’t say how much it wrote down, but Barber notes that execs ”were hoping we’d do 10% more than we did.” MGM has an option to co-finance the other two films in the trilogy and is talking to Sony about following through “assuming we can achieve better economics.” He was much more upbeat about the early performance of 21 Jump Street, which MGM also co-financed. “We expect it to be profitable,” Barber says. He adds that ”MGM has entered 2012 as a revitalized company.” He declined to describe MGM’s strategy but says it is “evaluating all options.”

As long as it has the same cast in the sequels, ill be happy

It is suppose to be the exact same. They signed up for the trilogy. I just hope they can get the next 2 made because I really liked this movie and I'm looking forward to the next one.

I bought my blu-ray/dvd combo yesterday. I've seen it but I'm looking forward to watching it again.

Yeah I got it when it came out but I haven't watched it yet cause I just haven't had the time

Very curious to see if Fincher decides to stay or not.

Agreed. I would assume no. And I doubt Reznor would continue to do the soundtrack too.

I don't understand how a movie like this is at a loss when it made that much money....someone in the business department is charging too much.....

RememberThe3574412d ago

Yeah if you lost money on the film that brought it 200+ million dollars, you made some bad business decisions.

They have all sorts of tricks like selling distribution and marketing to themselves so they can say we lost tons on ads. Dvd sales will net a nice profit.

StarWarsFan4413d ago

They need to shoot the next ones back-to-back to save some money and cut the budgets a bit.

I read Rooney Mara only made like $200,000 (which is a ton but for the lead role of a movie this big it's nothing). Someone behind this film doesn't know how to handle money correctly.

She was also a complete nobody to the general public, which justified that salary.
