Confidential and books like Truman Capote’s In Cold Blood,” another agrees. “While not perfect, its combination of a detective thriller and spurts of extreme violence make Max Payne an unforgettable film” notes a third, contributing to the first positive critical consensus for a movie based on a video game. Alas, such was not the case, and instead, the Max Payne movie audiences were treated to was at best a mediocre action movie, filled with by-the-numbers directing, a confusing screenplay, and only a shadow of its source’s story, characters, and aesthetic.
