Historically Accurate ‘Spartacus’ Movie On The Way Written By The Guy Who Penned ‘300’ (Obviously)

The Playlist: Already the subject of Stanley Kubrick‘s 1960 film, the 2004 USA Network made-for-TV movie starring Goran Višnjić and the backdrop for Starz bloody and sexed up “Spartacus: Blood and Sand” and “Spartacus: Gods Of The Arena” it seems that GK Films feel that tale of Spartacus still needs to be told.

The studio has picked up a pitch written by Michael B. Gordon of “300” fame and not much else (his only credit since is a “story by” tag for “G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra”) that promises to make your history teacher happy. Instead of spinning the story of the slave leader into a new adventure, this project promises to stick closer to history. The project will focus on the years between 73 and 71 BC when Spartacus and his army of 30,000 gladiators and 40,000 freed slaves waged a bloody (but ultimately failed) rebellious war against the Romans, led by commander Marcus Licinius Crassus.

I do like history and period movies so I would like this just as I did '300'. I would hope they take the time to write it true to history and get the right people to work on it.

"The Last 70mm Film Festival," Presented by AMPAS, Summer 2012

FilmFracture:

A recent trend in journalism is to write about the death of film. Not film as a medium but as the method in which movies are created and screened for viewers. Digital is taking over, and 16mm, 35mm, 70mm, and the like are becoming distant memories of what was once standard practice at a movie theatre. Film is not dead, though, and The Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences is holding a rare 70mm film festival to celebrate some of the best, and in their own right epic, films that were made on the long forgotten 70mm format. There will even be rare showings of short films shot in 70mm as well. Running through the Summer the festival will feature six-films from the golden age of 70mm print filmmaking to be screened at the Academy's The Samuel Goldwyn Theater in Beverly Hills, California.
