Nerd Reactor: Rango is not only the first animated feature from ILM but the first from Director Gore Verbinski as well. Rango stepped into a genre where many studios have already established themselves as CGI powerhouses. Instead of the cute fluff we are used to from Pixar, this western tale chose to take cg animation into some dark territory where it has never been before. Gritty, dirty, violent, and just as hard edged as the residents of Dirt, Rango is anything but a kiddies film. This is why it succeeds on nearly every level and is so far, in this writer’s humble opinion, the best animated film of 2011.
