The 10 Best Superhero Origin Stories Ever Put to Film

From TMP:

When it comes to superhero movies, nothing is more important than the origin story. It sets up not just the character, but the tone and future plot points of the franchise to come (or in some cases, the movie itself). If you botch this, then you’ve already botched the entire franchise potential. And for a movie like this week’s Green Lantern, first impressions are everything. Green Lantern needs to nail its origin story if it hopes to become the next big superhero franchise. Here are eight other origin stories that Green Lantern should try to emulate if it wants to hit its mark.

I wasn't a fan of The Incredibles like everybody else seemed to be. I thought it was of course a great movie but it wasn't the 10/10 masterpiece everyone tells me it was (at least to me).

The live action TMNT's were brilliant back in the day. It's been years since I sat down and watched one of those.

Happy to see Kick-Ass on there too, I love that film.

I'm with you. I'm not on board The Incredibles bandwagon like others seem to be. I'm not even sure I'd call it "great". It was good, though, and I enjoyed it. But it wasn't this amazingly, awesome masterpiece like some make it out to be. That's why it ranks lower on my list of Pixar movies I'd like to see a sequel for when people bring that up.

darklordzor4692d ago

I really enjoyed it. But I don't think it's stood the test of time as well as other Pixar movies. I remember thinking it was one of the best when I saw it in theaters, but as I've gone back and can re-watch other Pixar films over and over again, I can't make it through Incredibles. It's odd, but my opinion of it has dulled since it released.

I liked it, but I always saw the potential to be greater than what it was. They could of explored so much more, so I cant wait for a second one to come out.

I rather they parody a little bit more too. However I think I found the first one funny because I have a little brother named Jack and he was a baby at the time haha

alycakes4692d ago

Definitely not number 1 for The Incredibles but other than that the list is a good one.

Finally saw Super 8 this weekend....great movie. Those kids were so good. It took me back to ET.

Personally, I think Unbreakable should be #1. Batman Begins did nail the origins part of the character, but the rest of the movie wasn't very good. I might add The Mask of Zorro with Antonio Banderas. I love the scene where Anthony Hopkins is training him. Zorro did after all influence Batman. He's just as good as a superhero IMO.

darklordzor4692d ago

Meh, I think Unbreakable was in a good spot. It was a great movie though, and was happy to see it on the list.

JL4692d ago

Unbreakable? Really? I didn't care for that movie at all. It had moments of potential and was an interesting premise. However, in the end, it was just bland and boring. Even pretentious at times. It seemed to work alright (even good) at first. Then, it just started degrading: poor writing, etc. And ultimately was just a bit lackluster and disappointing.

darklordzor4692d ago

I wouldn't go that far. In fact it's still one of my favorite M. Night films. I think he hit a good stride and made an artistic film. I know I really enjoyed it and still do.

artsaber4692d ago (Edited 4692d ago )

It is one of my all time worst films, a waste of Bruce and Sam's talents IMO. I like Lady in the Water better with Paul Giamatti (one of my faves). M. Night couldn't shoot a film out of a wet paper bag. Look at what abomination he made of The Last Airbender. Only an idiot like Shymalan would change the NAME of the main character of an established series. I mean he changed AANG to UNG in pronunciation. Imagine if he would've directed Transformers, Optimus Prime would be OPEtimas and Megatron would be MUGatron. I mean this guy received death threats over Airbender, possibly from most folks who would be considered perfectly sane.

But I am with everyone else on Incredibles, but a $35 Bluray is ridiculous as the standard store price right now. It was good, but not THAT good. I must bargain shop for that on Bluray.

darklordzor4692d ago

I disagree with the ordering of this list (especially Incredibles at #1, though I think it deserves to be on the list) but overall I find it pretty agreeable. Can't believe Superman doesn't pop up at all though.

Defectiv3_Detectiv34692d ago

Good point. Superman pretty much wrote the book on how to make a modern comic book film.

darklordzor4692d ago

Yeah, that's what I was thinking. The first film was pure origin story. Though to be honest...I'm getting tired of origin story movies. I'd rather see a comic book film (that's not a sequel) just pick up and go. Take the character for what he is and expand upon it.

CobraKai4692d ago

Even Spiderman followed Superman's template for an origin story. I can't believe it's not there. Without Superman, superhero movies wouldn't have been taken seriously.

@Darklordzor
I'm hoping that's what they do for Zack Snyder's Superman. Just pick up and go.

Soldierone4692d ago

This article on origin stories reminds me on why I hate origin stories...Why do we need origin stories? Honestly...I understand building a new character so you can learn about him, but there are other options around it.

Origin stories are simply just the easiest way to make a movie and it gets old.

darklordzor4692d ago

Totally agree. It's like a fail-safe for movie studios. They spent years trying to get the comic book movie genre right, and once they did, they never let go of that formula. I think comic book movies have evolved past that point and need to move forward.

Defectiv3_Detectiv34692d ago

That's kind of why I like Blade so much; it was one of the first comic book movies of it's kind in this new generation of superhero films so it still had to work as a standalone film. It's not just a setup for a sequel.
