You had to know the movie was going to do well. I might have expected just a tad better domestic, but it still managed to be the best opening this year, so that's nothing to scoff at at all. I've known from the beginning of the year that this was going to end up being one of the best box office performers for the year. Potter and Transformers will be the ones to watch out for to take the crown from Jack Sparrow and gang.

Crazay4713d ago

Ya it's no surprise at all that this is top dog right now. I think Captain America is going to be absolutely gigantic.

Defectiv3_Detectiv34713d ago

hmmm...you really think Captain America will have the same international appeal? I wonder.

JL4713d ago

I don't see that actually. I just don't see the movie doing as well. It will do well, don't get me wrong. But it won't be of the level of Pirates. It won't have the same international appeal, nor do I see it doing as well in domestic box offices.

rfhuang4713d ago

I agree with _JL_. There's no real evidence to support that. Iron Man numbers are possible, (which are great but not worthy of competing with Pirates). There's no evidence it would beat Iron Man's numbers.

rfhuang4713d ago

I don't know about Transformers. Maybe if the marketing hits really big. I still agree with the Top 5 article before and say that Kung Fu Panda 2 will be a competitor for #1 Box Office.

JL4713d ago

I don't know. The last Transformers movie did $109 million in it's opening weekend. I can see this third one hitting in that same range. Especially given that it has no competition releasing the week it releases. The closest it has to competition is Cars 2 releases a week before. And Green Lantern releases two weeks before. So they're not exactly real competition.

Kung Fu Panda...I just don't see it being a competitor for that. I don't even see it being a Top 10 for the year. I'm sure it will do well enough, but not as great as you think. In fact, I might be slightly surprised if it breaks $50M for opening weekend (domestic). Especially considering the competition it is going up against.

rfhuang4712d ago

I guess the bad criticisms haven't detered audiences from Transformers before. Cars 2 and Green Lantern would have to get great praises to be competition.
Yeah I see. You think Kung Fu Panda ends up being the 13th egg that weekend. We will see.

Nes_Daze4713d ago

I heard it was nothing special, and I'm not completely surprised.

Sahil4712d ago

Yes, it's POTC fo god sake. not a surprise at all.

artsaber4713d ago

I haven't seen it yet. I think most people watch for the effects more than anything else.

KonohagakureFC4713d ago

346 million opening weekend? And that is why there will be a pirates 5

-MD-4713d ago (Edited 4713d ago )

And 6 I'm sure.

Defectiv3_Detectiv34713d ago

We'll see. Johnny Depp is the face of this franchise after all and he seems to be getting burnt out. If the movie is as bad as the recent reviews would indicate maybe it isn't such a bad thing for the franchise to take a break.

alycakes4713d ago

You've got that right...and I'll be there for that one too. When you go see it this one doesn't have anything worth waiting for after the credits though.....that I will be honest about. There's usually something good or something to give an idea about the next movie but this was maybe 5 seconds of p. cruz...it was dumb. See it if you wish.
