Uncharted Movie Update

From IGN:

David O. Russell, the Oscar-nominated director of The Fighter, has signed on to write and direct the big-screen adaptation of the hugely popular Uncharted series with Columbia Pictures, for a rumoured release date of 2013.

Mark Wahlberg, who Russell has collaborated with on three previous movies, looks set to play Nathan Drake, but with unspecified roles rumoured for Robert De Niro and Joe Pesci, and the director circling two big stars for the lead female roles, we wanted to get an update straight from the horse's mouth...

Wow! Everything he says, almost entirely proves he's never played the game. He makes mention of story elements that NEVER happened. I'm seriously wondering if he's playing another game and thinking it's Uncharted. He's way off the mark.

I think I'm done with this movie. He's not listening or caring about the fans, and has made it clear that this will be 'Uncharted' in name only.

I'm with you. This seriously breaks my heart. "Centered around a family"? What the hell is this guy thinking. Now he wants to take this so-called story of a family from Uncharted and make it like the family dynamic of The Fighter?

Not to get on The Fighter really, but that was part of my problem was that it focused too much on the family, didn't capitalize on the great underdog story or even focus enough on the main character.

He's seriously going to botch the hell out of this. And when he does, I will probably never watch another movie from him. Hell, I already consider him just a mediocre director at best. I've still yet to understand why they picked him. They should've got Robert Zemeckis to do it. Or Richard Donner, he's not doing anything. And I could totally see Uncharted being worked as some sort of blend between Goonies and Lethal Weapon.

Sounds like he is talking Tomb Raider, or is that just me? With the whole sister thing and what not. I cant think of the other adventure game that had anything to do with family at all.

To have The Fighter focus so much on the family was fine with me because it showed what was going on for him behind the scenes. We've all seen the underdog story of a boxer a million times. The Fighter was a great tale of an underdog fighter who was constantly overshadowed by things his brother did and the things his family put him through for their own benefit.

I give David O. huge props for making a great movie in the fighter but this is BS.

Pardon my french but sweet merciful fuck - What is this guys problem? What Family? Did you guys see a family in the game? Does Nathan Drake have a sister that helps him on his adventures? No. He has a love interest and he has a guy who is his mentor and best friend kind of like a father figure. That's far from a family.

I'm sorry but that interview has me a little cheesed off right now.

The groundwork for the movie has already been built in the game series already. Why go to all these great lengths just to make it his own when clearly it's not his own and the fans don't want it to be. Sony needs to step in and send this guy packing because he's going to ruin one of the best gaming franchises and characters to come along in the last 10 years.

IGN: Of all the video game movies, why was Uncharted the one for you?

David O. Russell: Because it's centred around a family, and I like the combination of criminals and truth. These guys they're tough but they're working on this crazy case, and they can't do it without truth. I think that's cool.

uumm yea what the hell is he thinking ... i'm trying to come up with a game that he actually might be thinking about.

Or he just saw a few minutes of gameplay and though that Elena was his sister and Sully was his father. I'm starting to think this is it that he didn't play jack saw a few minutes of it and came up with that.

I'll just ignore it and say the new game is the movie. :)

He also says the scaling and what not isn't important. Yet look at the Prince of Persia movie, they still including it because it is important. Thats how Drake gets to places, he climbs and swings on things. Its not a friggin action movie and thats how he is seeeing it.

Then "will the curse be a part in the movie" his answer should of been straight up YES ITS MAJOR PART OF THE GAME. For crying out loud.

That's a very valid point about the action movie thing as well. This isn't action. It's adventure (or at least it should be). Of course Hollywood as a whole has been slowly killing off the magic of the adventure genre and slowly just turning it into just plain action movies. I mean you rarely get really good old fashioned adventure movies like the original Indiana Jones movies, Romancing the Stone, Jewel of the Nile, The Goonies, etc. I'm talking those good older movies that provide good swashbuckling type adventures (or at least are done in such a way as to pay homage to those swashbucklers that paved the way for the genre). That's exactly what Uncharted should be at its core.

Granted there have been some fun ones in modern times. The Mummy comes to mind. National Treasure to a degree. Pirates of the Caribbean definitely. But you're seeing less and less of that these days. And even less than that actually doing it well.

Seriously, Romancing the Stone would be a great model for an Uncharted movie. With a blend of Indiana Jones. All modernized just a bit and throw in just a touch of the Mummy series (in regards to the supernatural aspects).
