That was my conclusion after replay that last scene a few times too.
But it was an important moment right at the end that went by so fast it had you saying "wait what?"

I think that part of the ending was actually pretty obvious. What I had hoped for was more confusion as to whether or not he was really insane or had been convinced he was. Of course I'm not at all familiar with the books so my opinion is based entirely on the film.
