Oh Tim Burton, how far the mighty have fallen. Once one of the most visionary and original directors of our time, in the 21st century Burton has given up on creating original works (with the exception of his last good film, Big Fish) in favor of needless adaptations and flat remakes of timeless classics (Planet of the Apes, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Sweeney Todd). But Burton’s Alice in Wonderland marks somewhat of a departure from his recent M.O. in that while still an adaptation, it’s also an original interpretation of it.
